Hey Guys I have Acer one ( Atom 1.6 / 1.5GB Ram / 8GB SSD ) This laptop Is very slow. I mean it, it takes ages to load something simple ( even surf net or watch a movie or a show ) Why it's slow ? Because The weak CPU ? or the SSD disk ? There are models with hard drives.. those should be faster and act like normal laptop ? The price of one with 160GB is around 350 $ and this normal laptop ( Acer S4530 ) cost 500 $ and it should good. So I was thinking to sell this crap and buy new thing
Intel Atom was designed for low power usage, and is really only useful for Word Processing, bit-tech browsing and music playback, and is far from designed for games. I know people with the Asus EEE with only 1gb of memory and it flies with no trouble at all, so it could be that you have a resource eating application running, or your trying to do to much at the same time. It could be something completely un-related to anything i've just written, but you never know. Sam Ninja Edit, i Have a 1.4ghz power pc mac mini with 1gb of ram and it runs fine, and is nice and nippy, but soon as i load up more than 5 tabs in Firefox it starts to slow down a little and soon as youtube is opened, it's almost game over.
really ? Mean it's normal ! not because the SSD... means the HD ver will not run any faster than the SSD I have, Right ? I don't want to game on it just browse files, Pics, Watch vids, Movies, Tv Shows on the run
Well, the SSD should be fine, and i don't think is your bottleneck, it could be video playback, again, atom isn't really designed for that, well, it is, but only when it's hooked up with nvidia ion, and there are no current netbook releases for atom/ion machines. I assume your running Windows XP, or Linux? Sam
Hum, i'm going back to my original idea that you have a large app running and is thus using more juice than you think, i also think that video playback could be partly to blame as well. Was it sluggish in the first few weeks after purchasing it? Sam
yup it's alwasy been like that even after formatting Linux and putting xp Don't think so there is an app because it's a clean install and never installed any applications
Hum, it is strange, and i don't really know what could be causing such a slow down. If you go into task manager, whats your CPU usage and RAM usage like? Sam PS, i hope i get rep for this heh
Sounds to me like you've gotten too used to a Q9450-powered rig with 4GB of RAM. I've been using an Aspire One recently with Linux and it felt perfectly good, more than acceptable for the hardware tbh.
got an aspire one on xp (1.6 atom).. same as krikkit said, it runs fine.. I use windows blinds on it though- gave it to my girlfriend for conferences she goes to- all she uses on it really is word 2007 to take notes on the speaker you might try checking msconfig to see if there's anything running you don't need.. that mcaffee is garbage- you can uninstall that.. auto updates can be shutoff- just do it manually.. use tweak xp or something similar to adjust the cache size
Check for viruses and ect. Disable the page file (this really only saves space)? See what is running in the background and kill unneeded services. Try using nLite to slim down your WinXP disk. Lastly, scan for malware. I have the EEE901 with only a 4GB SLC SSD and with a slimmed down WinXP SP3, it runs super zippy. I connect it to a 19" monitor and I can open around 3 opera windows w/ prob 4-5 tabs each and still watch a lower res movie. Its not the greatest multi-tasker, but its suffiecent to do almost anything. 720p videos even runs (a bit laggy during extreme action scenes). Don't underestimate the Atom. Anyway, you should probably wait for an nVidia Ion platform netbook or wait for Tegra and see how that runs. Also, make sure ur anti-virus isn't hogging everything. Nod-32 trial on my EEE for some reason made the cpu run @ 50% constantly (its such a shame) and everything was slow as hell. Put on Avira9 and it runs smooth and snappy.
I have the AA0 with 1.5gb ram and W7 and its runs like a charm. Only slows down with music+web+dreamweaver at the same time.

As the first article says, it looks a bit like the original Pentium clocked really fast (in comparison). IIRC, single core performance is ~ that of a P3 at half the clock speed. That said, SSDs do not have to be amazingly fast. I believe the first eee PCs had some problems with poor SSD performance. But from the above comments, it does not appear to be a problem for Acer. If you want 'normal' laptop performance, you will need to get a normal laptop with a normal laptop price. Of course, that will have a normal laptop battery life. You might look into a used notebook as you should be able to find some at a similar price to a new netbook.

Actually, didn't the second gen Eee PCs have the problems with the SSD? That's the gist I get from Eeeuser.com anyway. As stated in the thread, you should probably nLite the hell out of your XP install, and try again. My first gen, 630mhz Eee PC 4G with 2GB RAM is perfect for browsing the internet, even Hulu works decently. (Can I trade my Hulu rights for iPlayer rights? I want Top Gear on demand.. ) CK, you're probably just not used to the netbook. I know that when my Eee PC was my only PC, it seemed really fast, but when I put together my Shuttle, then went back to the Eee PC, it seemed really REALLY slow. Theres tons of things in Windows that you can fiddle with to optimize it for netbook use, but there's a limit of what you can expect.
I love netbooks, so maybe I'm a bit biased, but I have no problem switching to and from using using my EEE901, C2D PC, or Vostro 1400. Actually, I probably have more usage time on the EEE and the Vostro. Everything I need besides games and 1080p works on my EEE, so I have no complaints (can't tell diff from 1080p and 720p on such a small screen). If you really want zippy performance, try out a Runcore SATA or SuperTalent SATA (the PATA ones have problems) Mini Pci Express ssd. (If you have an EEEPC) As I don't have an AAOne, I dont know about its SSD performance, but check out the aspireoneuser forums.
It's weird that all of you have no problem with it I don't really know why the hell mine is slow!! Do you guys use special edition windows other than OEM copy ? Or what tweaks did you do ?
I'll post the services I shutdown- I made a ss while back and use it even on home editions.. it'll run great after it's tweaked out.. I can't really recommend enough to get ahold of windowsblinds.. made by stardock- they worked with microsoft to create a themes service that's not only smaller than the one that comes with xp- but it's faster.. in vista aero is fine but xp- it makes a really big difference from what I've seen in window draw- if you like instant windows to come up.. plus they have a bunch of themes made I mean the service is smaller and better than what comes in xp itself.. I also use this program here http://www.tweakxp.com/tweakutility/ I know they both cost money (well you know lol).. lemme get the services, got them on disc somewhere.. but to simplify- I usually install everything first- drivers, windows update.. windows blinds, shutdown the services, and then the tweak xp app to finish oh yeah you want to make your windows page file static also.. this will help in keeping it defragged
