I soo wanted to put Jedi Knight in, believe me. That was the game that first introduced me to multiplayer gaming, back on the MSN Zone. Ahh, good times.

But it's a second job IN SPACE!

Grabbed Freespace 2 off GOG, only played the first tutorial, any way to make it so you can control your ships direction with the mouse?

    Yes!
You have to locate the options on the flight deck and click where it says "enable mouse".
If I remember correctly it is the guy sitting in the bottom of the screen looking at a map of star systems.

    My favorite is absolutely:
    - Oni (best 3rd person adventure/shooter)
    - Operation Flashpoint (best 3rd/1st person war)
    - Ford Racing (I don't know, I like Ford cars :)
    - all Half Life series (surely the best 1st person shooter ever!)

And what else.. Oh you forgot about Mario Bros LOL. Everyone should've played that game once in their lifetime! :)

EVE is the PhD of gaming, not to be taken lightly, and not exactly a game so much as "A Way of Life".

As far as wanting to put games in and the gnashing of teeth going on here over this article, I would like to offer an idea of an article of sorts.
"The Top 101 PC games of All-Time", and the members of this forum and the Bit-Tech worker bees can submit lists with up to 101 games on it. The games with the most votes on the most lists are at the top and so on. Might be a fun article.

There are some missing genres in here... though I agree with the majority of the list. I would say Mechwarrior 2 is a must play. The first one was old and not very mechwarrior, while 3 and 4 failed to really capture the lumbering massiveness of the mechs. Mech2 however... that single handledly defined the "mech" genre.
Another random one I have to add is Dinopark Tycoon. Anyone who went to elementary school in the early to mid 90's knows what I'm talking about. How do you think all the other tycoon games got so popular?

Don't agree with Rome: Total War - compared to it's predecessors it was a glammed up shadow of the depth and complexity that both Shogun and the original Medieval managed to create (not to mention the bugs involved). I accept that it was a lot more accessible, but the price of that was reducing it to not much more than a combination of civilisation + a standard RTS rolled into one game.

Although I agree, It was addictingly fun, not as fun and awesome as Shogun, but it did hold quite a bit of sway, enough to make Medieval 2 look bad.

It seems the writers forgot about Total Annihilation(no SupCom because it's like TA), Morrowind, Rollercoaster Tycoon 2, No one Lives Forever, and of course, Age of Empires 2.

For some unknown reason though, I'm am currently addicted to SimCity 3000 and SimTower.

ah I missed this one.. I thought I was the only one to play outcast! that game still sticks in my mind.. if you've never played the early doom games.. hexen was a spinoff that I thought was pretty cool for it's time too (in the mid 90's)

Oi! Gabe Newell didn't create Counter Strike. It was Minh "Gooseman" Le.
Okay, Mr. Newell and friends did do Source, but by then all the creative and ground work had been laid and I don't think they really deserve that much of the credit for it. But anyway, nice article!

My top 10 PC games (in particular order, cos I can't decide one)

    Grim Fandango
    Mafia
    Commandos 2
    Half-Life
    Thief 2
    Planescape Torment
    Baldurs Gate
    Deus Ex
    Fallout 2
    Messiah

As it turns out, only two games are from this decade, proving to me at least, "they don't make 'em like they used to". I'm only 23 and feel so old for saying that. Its such a shame I can't play half of them on my current PC.
