You aren't going to be using theiphone 'hands free' on its own; my hands free kit has voice dialing so im set. The voice commands might be useful for when you can't use the touchscreen for whatever reason (gloves!), the speech stuff sounds great for accessibility.

    I had the same reaction

Apple keeps revealing the fixes the many flaws of the first as 'feature updates'. Examples: 3g, mms, copy and paste

Say Who Lite is a free app from Appstore that does the voice dialling. so it does have voice dialling, just not native within the OS. (aka the Springboard app)

what i really want is to be able to change song using my voice.

You get the pay again, teehee!

Seriously, all the iphone haters need to stop the hatin' - just because they have a proper OS that does 1000 things more than symbian et al its not suddenly less than cutting edge 'cos you can voice dial on it.

Yeah, imagine: a phone that actually can have features added with an OS update...

    Oh, and: vlingo. ;)

Yeah, what also disappoints me is that the iPhone does not have a "reboot" command in its e-mail or notes app. :p

    Nexxo, stop being mean. :p

And as far as I know we don't get any update, neither free nor for money. And no, Apple, I won't buy a 3rd generation iPod Touch just to get firmware 3.0!

I think people miss the point of the iPhone.

    It's a high-end 'fashion' phone... NOT a smart phone

Every update brings it closer yeah, but I still won't be buying one till I can run background apps. I'm personally in the smart phone demographic... However... If I wanted a normal phone for just phoning, and hey, it's got an iPod built in, then the iPhone's perfect.

This is also why if any of my less geeky friends want a high-end phone I shove them Apple's way.

Andriod is to compete with Windows Mobile / Symbian etc, on a power user / geek front. The iPhone has always been more of an attack on the average person's Motorola.

Don't know about that. The iPhone is pretty smart to me --and functional. Windows Mobile devices seem always quite unwieldy to me, and Android is very promising but needs some polishing up. I'll wait for v2.0... Meanwhile if you want a phone that is really smart and runs background apps, look at the Palm Pre. It is a glimpse of things in a saner, smarter parallel universe.
