Hey guys, just switched over from cpc forums. Have to say im liking my new home =)

Back to the point, Im having huge problems with fallout 3 (least im not the only one). Ive posted one 2 other forums asking for help yet yet have gotten no where with suggestions on what could be the problem. Below is my post from the official forums

Has anyone got any suggestions what could be causing this problem before I give up hope on this game?

Have you tried running the game with only 4GB of RAM, having all slots filled can cause instabilities.

Try playing the game in windowed mode this was the only way I could play the game with some sort of stability.

You have to bear in mind though that this game is choc a block full of bugs etc but none the less an awesome game.

I think fallout 3 is just one of those games that doesn't get on with Vista. Before I went back to XP my game also CTD or caused a BSOD, sometimes after an hour, others less than 10 minutes in....

Back on XP, no problems at all (and about 10 extra FPS).

@ D-Cyph3r My mate can run it fine (tho on low settings) on a P4 with x1800xt card and xp fine but at the same time the fallout 3 forums have people with the opposite situation lol. Might set up dual boot with xp anyway after my exams since I got timeshift only to find it doesnt like vista 64 >.>

@chesteh Ill give that a try and see what happens. Ive tried fiddling with the resoultion, v-sync, HDR, Bloom, lowering settings.....but with no luck.

Ive been doing more reading up and its been suggested that the game doesnt like dual cores in come cases. I was thinking of disabling a core to see what happens (worth a shot I guess). Is this safe to do or will I gimp my system?

Thanks so far everyone, other forums just seem to ignore this topic (understandable with so many problems tbh lol)

Tried running in windowed mode, worked well for a couple of hours but blacked screened with green vertical lines. Could the problem actually be with my PSU or monitor?

I've been having the exact same problems as you with C&C3 Kane's Wrath, although I think it just doesn't like my GFX card (even though C&C3 is fine).

i had huge stability problems with fallout3 as well, i think the game is just a bit buggy :hehe:

does seem that the game is VERY picky about overclocking, every other game i own runs fine at my normal settings, but overclocked 4870 in my PC = unstable fallout3, set card to defaults and is stable again.

the other major thing i've noticed:
vista and win7 beta = very unstable with fallout3
win7 RC1 = most stable i've ever seen the game on my PC :eeek:

I've ran the game in XP SP3 and 7 RC with no issues at all, it's actually one of the most stable games I've been playing of late.

here, in vista 64 and the fallout.ini is located in my documents>my games>fallout 3

change the existing cvars to these values (don't replace- I did this all myself on game release and didn't bother to write down changes, figured they'd patch it.. this is a list of certain values not the entire fallout.ini)

next go into the fallout launcher and turn off vsync, tweak away all you want (It won't effect the values tweaked earlier in the fallout.ini).. now in the nvidia control panel, force vsync on for fallout 3

I was having issues later in the game when it would load- these tweaks took awhile but got it stable pre-patch.. man I had a blast playing this game- but I admit I did max out all my guys stats =] could snipe a guy across the map with the victory rifle

lol I am the same as you guys. I've been running Vista itself since day one with no issues and Fallout 3 runs beautifully as well :)

I do hope you get the issue resolved soon. The game is fantastic and definitely worth playing.

Have you tried searching the fallout3 official technical support forum for other people having trouble with their HD4870 ?

If that's not it, I wonder if it could be an overheating problem. Oblivion is demanding but maybe Fallout 3 pushes the card that bit further and it is overheating or something. Personally I ran Fallout 3 on my computer, just after it was released, and it ran beautifully, and yet my PC is lower spec than yours. I would think that the HD4870's driver being the problem would be the most likely culprit, but I looked on google briefly and I didn't see any other people with issues and I saw people benchmarking HD4870's with Fallout 3. So at first glance at least, it didn't look like a common problem.

Do you have any unusual software running in the background? Or any unusual hardware plugged in?
