    +1

SOOOOOoooOOoo00 glad to see an update on this piece of art (I believe it has earned this title)

Until next time, I will wait. Perhaps a bit more patiently than last time, but no promises:worried:

It really is special, and have I said how hard that stuff is yet? :hehe:

I don't know but thanks. :thumb:

Haha, well all I can say in my defense is "it was a very cheap saw". :hehe:

Thanks mate. :thumb: And don't worry, as soon as I have something that looks a bit
different from the last update, I'll show you.

I've got a couple of days off so if the weather holds up I should be able to finish the main
    parts of the side panels.

Continuing on, the pieces that will partially wrap over the top and front are glued to the side
    panels.

Then this is taken down to match the profile of the side panels.

Then some more curves need to be made.

The best way to get both sides identical is to clamp them together.

And then cut away till the desired shape is achieved.

    And same for the front.

Tomorrow (hopefully), I can make the final cuts.

    Thanks mate.

    Thanks DF.

    Thank you.

    Thanks Colossous.

    Thanks Cheaps.
Yeah there's two schools of thought regarding this. One school considers any of these
natural features a "defect" and these peeps carefully select their timber to be free of any
of these. The other school looks at these as a pleasant natural feature, and even seek them
out. I belong to the second school, I love "some" of these features and if I find a particularly
pleasing feature, it's like I've won the lotto.

Having said that, it all depends on what the borer hole, sap void or other feature looks like,
and where it's located. The one that was uncovered while making the profile on the top edge
was unexpected and when first found didn't look very pleasant. But read on, it starts to look
    better.
The one on the front inside edge above is problematic and probably needs to be filled, we'll
    see.
In the pic you mention, the piles on the right are gravel and sand from some paving that had
to be done. The pile on the left is indeed all Jarrah and is what's left over from about, at a
guess, 12 or 14 Kilo's of material that's been removed from the side panels of Cygnus X1.

    Thanks EEL.

Today turned out to be a beautiful winters day. Sunny and about 14C with no wind, perfect
    working weather.

So the two panels needed some work done to the sharp outside edges.

I started by taking the edge off straight, just to have a look.

And the same for the front.

As you can see (well I do ) the feature here starts looking a bit better as the area
    becomes a bit more complex.

But these straight edges don't suit the overall flavor of the design.

So the process of rounding over the edges begins.

    And...... I think it's nice.

It's almost impossible to see the join here.

And the same is done for the other side.

So here are the two largely done panels.

So what's left to do here is some fine chiseling and adjusting of the various shapes to get
them as close to identical as possible. And then a whole heap of sanding. Some profiles may
change a little as things are refined. Then when it's all nice and smooth and free from any
machining marks, about seven or eight coats of satin polyurethane will be applied.
When I come back I'll be making the hinges and fitting the panels to the chassis.

Thanks for looking and the comments. :thumb:

WOW, looks like a single, solid piece of wood. Very nice work, the wood is looking very smooth and is very pleasing to look at. A great shame about the borer holes, some people (such as myself) don't mind them as they are a natural piece of the wood (like the grain itself) but in this case they really stand out, a real shame.

I'm not sure anymore if this project should be allowed on a family forum... ;) It's a work of art, and it just keeps gettin' better.

Although, I must say that now that I checked the last pictures of the alu-frame, I don't know if I would hide it in the wood covers. I mean, the wood looks awesome, but the frame is so well finished it's a shame to hide it. If only there was a way of making the wood transcluent ;)

    Thanks for the comments. :)

I've just brushed the first coat of clear on (the first four coats are brushed on nice and
thick), and I couldn't resist showing you how pretty this wood is.

This first coat also helps me see any irregularities that I may have missed on the raw
wood. I can now see that the curve on the front edge needs some more attention, so
when this dries I can attend to that.
