Graphics Gaming on a 24in Monitor (1920x1200)

Hi all,

This'll be my first post here, unfortunately it's a question.

I'm looking to upgrade to a new system soon and thought I'd aim for a large monitor, possibly the HP LP2475W.

What kind of graphical power would be required for a smooth gaming/desktop experience at a resolution of 1920x1200 on a 24in screen? I'm not looking to play the most recent games with full bells-and-whistles, I'm more just looking for a smooth gaming/desktop experience and the ability to watch DVD/Blue-Ray movies.

My initial thoughts were along the lines of a Nvidia GTX275 or a Radeon 4890.

Whats the rest of your spec?

Im gaming very smoothly @ 1920x1080 with a GTX285 (the 275 wasn't around at xmas when I bought it) but a 275 is a good choice if you don't want to spend anymore. They can be overclocked above the level of the 285 and should play most games at high-ish settings apart from the obvious like Crysis.

Im bias towards Nvidia graphics cards but im sure the ATI boys will be able to tell you about the 4890.

I don't quite have a finalised idea for the rest of the system yet, although something in the 4GB RAM / P45 Chipset / Q9550 area is what I've been looking at.

Although - with the release of Win7/DirectX11, the new Intel i3/5/7 range and P55 coming soon I've been thinking of holding off until November time as this may get me a system for a similar price with more longevity...

 

The GTX275 has about 90% the GTX285's performance, so you might want to pick it up first.

 

The new i7 range is not as good as the current one. If anything, the approach of these new processors should make you rush the build and pick up an i7 920 while you can, not hold off.

 

Meh, I run all games at 1920x1200 on an 8800GT, nothing wrong with that at all

 

So do I, although it is starting to show its age.

If I had some more dosh (recently unemployed) I might consider upgrading.

My current setup is around five years old - I'm using a GeForce 6800 and a 17in TFT @ 1280x1024, so I didn't want to just assume something like a GTX275 would be able to cope well with the monitor size/resolution in my original post and then discover it's too much for it. Or, vice-versa, that it's overkill and I could happily use a cheaper card.

 

My brother seemed to find a 9600GT running a 1920X1080 acceptable.

I find a GTS250 running a 1280X1024 19" M-PVA TFT panel sluggish for most games already... ;O

 

I've had no issues with my 260 GTX runnin my 24 at 1920 x 1200.

 

im running a 4870 1gb here on 1920 x 1200 and runs everythimg smooth =)

 

Nice screen, if you can manage to find one fault free, I had three from HP and all of them were faulty, ended up getting a refund and buying a NEC 24WMGX3...

As regards which card to get between the 275 and 4890, well I would simply get the one that plays the games you play best...

I was going to post this exact same thread almost, good to hear its a good choice.

My friend ry@n has a 285GTX and its quite a lot more expensive and the 275 seems like the ideal choice

 

I'm curious about what you dislike on the new i7 range? The last several machines I've built have been i7 based, and I haven't gotten any complaints... at least not yet

 

If you want to watch BluRay, remember that you need to look for monitors and graphics cards that are HDCP capable - or be willing to buy a program that runs resident in the background to catch the protection. First machine I built with a BluRay drive taught me that lesson!

 

I would go 4870 or greater.
I have a 22inch 1920 x 1080 on a 4850 and it runs pretty good. But I would like something better. If you can afford it, get better than the 4870. Ati or nvidia.

 

HD4890 is about $189 over here in the US, the GTX275 is $215 though.

 

I'm an ATI fanboy, though I'd be inclined to go GTX275, looking at the prices lately. Ebuyer has a nice 24" BenQ monitor in as well

 

i bought a gtx 275 about a month back had a little problem with it (or so i thought lol. read...MY GTX IS DOING MY HEAD IN about 4 pages back). Its sorted now. i can say on my system i can run crisis on gamer settings at 1680+1050 without much problems it slows a little with alot going on but all in all id say it would do you for your requirments. running win7 with 2 gig mem 900mhz duel core running 2.70mhz and the monitor is a samsung 226bw.

I'd wager that he's talking about the 1156 or something based i7 CPU's coming up.
