Are you condoning piracy? How many honest jobs have been lost due to these thieving b*****ds. Any support of piracy is a smack in the face to honest people.

Long time reader. First post really. Finally something I wanted to comment on and had the time for. Thanks.

"Peter Sunde, Fredrik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm and Carl Lundström were found guilty of assistance to copyright infringement and sentenced to one year in prison and payment of a fine of 30 million SEK (app. 3,620,000 USD; 2,385,000 GBP; or 2,684,000 euro)"

    From Wikipedia, easily coraborated elsewhere.

What about that don't these users understand? These guys went to bat, and struck out for US. Real jailtime, real consequences, and some of these pukes think they SOLD OUT? Yeah, they sold out, it only took a conviction. They must be real pushovers.

Take a chill pill, they don't owe us anything. They are pioneers that have lead us this far. If the business model for the "New" Pirate Bay is what I want it to be (and not iTunes, nor Amazon, nor anything has been so far) I might actually buy my first piece of music in years.

/end rant. This wasn't really toward anyone specifically posting above me by the way. No hurt feelings.

Ok, I will point this out.

People still have jobs in the entertainment industry, artists still make money, movies can still be blockbusters. TV shows still make advertisers money, and still get made. Communications companies and content creators still post either profit, or the same losses that everyone else in this economy does. Can't blame piracy on any of that.

"Potential money earned" is not the same as "Money stolen", or "Money lost". Some of those dollars (Euro, pounds, whatever) might have went toward an honest job, but not it all. If you are smacked in the face because of it, I apologize. In same way I apologize to a person that overheard a curse word and got offended. "I am sorry, but go away, this isn't your business".

I can't in all good faith condone all of it, I mean yes... some software publishers are suffering right now. Not the Microsofts, but the small guys who spend the money to get it out there, and aren't making anything. Indie Artists probably have smaller bills, and more ways of making supplementary income (Shirts/Concerts) than an indie game maker. Nothing is perfect, but I think when the consumer speaks, the industry needs to realign or face failure. I mean, you cannot stop these people. You just can't.

That's what pirates do, they stab each other, killing for loot.

I pay for software I think is good, and use regularly, otherwise I don't. TPB stood for all people that felt to much money is spent on software and media that doesn't deserver it.

I have torrented and thinking back I've felt bad.

I feel good buying games now because I know I am supporting people's jobs and such. However I should've chosen something other than GTA4 to buy. The game is so badly ported I can't even be bothered to play it. :grr:

But the one thing that REALLY ticks me off is all these ignorant and self righteous people claiming that TPB stabbed them in the back, or they sold out etc.

Utterly pathetic. Bet none of those guys paid a dime for anything and yet they expect service and all that. It's people with that kind of attitude that we don't need on this planet. :nono:

Fair enough fair enough, but what about downloading stuff that isn't even licensed for sale in your country? How can you pay for it? If it's not in your country why shouldn't you download it? Why should people not get access to whatever if it isn't licensed there? They aren't losing a sale and living on the idea that it "might" come to your country is pointless unless it's confirmed so I don't see the problem with it. The pirate bay was a good site but even if they sell it and it becomes a completely different website what have we lost? It's rare these days for a torrent to only be uploaded to one torrent site so it's really not a big deal.

If there is a pointless red light that makes me wait 5 minutes out in the rain on an empty road, i walk right through it.
If my boss asks me to do something particularly stupid, i make him explain it to me three times and take extra long to complete the task. I will even go so far as to complain about it to my coworkers when he's gone.
If gamestudios ask me to cough up 50 euros for a game that could easily be profitable at 15, and is worth even less, i refuse to pay for it.
If a moviestudio releases their blockbusters months later here in poor old Holland then in the states, i download.

It's simple civil disobedience. It's a way for those of us who are too scared or simply not bothered enough to put in their 2 cents.
I'm not proud of downloading. I dont feel guilty about it either though. It's just a petty response to a petty industry.
Oh, and by the way, i DO pay for the occasional game, just to support creators of good content. I have recently bought L4D, World of Goo, Mass Effect, and just now The Last Remnant. For me to pay for a game, i have but two demands: It must be innovative and entertaining to a point where i like it, and it must be light on DRM.

More on topic: i just deleted my TPB account as well. No matter what the plans are, it will no longer be the true bulwark of free internet that it used to be. If it turns out any good, i might rejoin.

Are the founders of the Pirate Bay making Video Bay meaning they sold the site that was giving them issues to make a new site to create new issues.

I do but it doesn't mean I support it either. I don't remember the last time I downloaded a game because I buy them now. I admit I download movies which maybe I shouldn't do, but I don't feel guilty at all about downloading TV Shows as they are on TV once and then you have to wait months before you get the DVD release. I want my episodes now and I want to be able to watch them whenever I want. I don't think it's any worse than doing 110 on the highway - Technically illegal , but it doesn't hurt anybody

Ya know, my comment is focused on something that analysts are talking about that has NOTHING to do with piracy.

There is a real movement to make EVERYTHING pay for access. Not only would you pay to get on the internet, but then every site you wanted to visit would also charge you a subscription-much like pay for porn sites, for the crass among us. I'm not going all conspiracy theorist, it's very easy to watch what's going on here-case in point, XS has set up a "donation" system to add better features in order to "pay for bandwidth", even though it's run out of the closet at the owner's day job (pull a traceroute on it, it's no libel if it can be verified) and to pay for "SSDs" that seemingly cause it to stop working every month or so.

XS is THE place for a lot of amazing hardware info (just as we are THE place for modding) and it's heart-wrenchingly sad to see what it's become. However, analysts tell me that's what they want the net to become-no place for personal sites, really, just a big corporate machine. (Seems to make more money that way.)

This is not a sense of entitlement, per se. This is about social disorder, well and truly-keeping a government on its toes, where it should be. Read Plato's Republic-he espoused much the same ideals. Only he talked about overthrowing the government every few decades.

Oh wow. You are either from US or you should really write a book about moral issues. Or better yet, find a better job.

But jokes aside, the world didn't end neither when Napster "sold out" nor when Suprnova closed so I don't think that it will end now. There will be another TPB, probably bigger and better.
Personally I buy things that are worth the money and download all the others - when I want to play a certain game I download it. If I like it, I buy it, but it usually stays unopened thanks to intrusive DRM - cracked versions tend to work far better. If I don't like it, I just uninstall after a few minutes. If not for TPB I would never be able to watch all seasons of "The Simpsons" (there were a few episodes in TV a few years ago and that's it, no DVDs) or Futurama (not licensed here at all).
I think that this kind of usage is typical for average downloaders, I can't actually find anything morally harmful in that. Most people that only download and never pay are usually the ones that wouldn't buy anyway - poor students and so on.

I'm not saying that downloading is good, but the "threat do development" is greatly exaggerated and is just used as an excuse - "sorry that GTA4 was such a disasterous port, it's all because those nasty pirates stealing our games we had to spend more time on making the fancy 'drunk camera' effect and implementing some extremely intrusive DRM (that was cracked in three days) than on actually making the game. We also had to create the RGSC that nobody will use but it will bug you every time you want to just play the game for a while." Lame excuse when you think about it.

Now, the freedom of the Internet is an entirely different matter. I don't think that the Internet will be usable in five years. It will be sold in access-restricted packets (EU directive covering this was recently voted or will be voted soon, I'm too sleepy to check it now), all your IM conversations will be stored and read (EU directive on that just passed - ISPs will have to store information on every IM connection and sent email. Not the content of conversation, but that's an "open matter for future debate" (quote from the reading of directive proposal before it was voted)). Every connection will be monitored (already done in UK - transparent proxies (worth a few mil) looking for those seventeen nasty guys watching CP). I had always hoped that by the time those things arrive I'd be too old to care, but lately there was a real avalanche of strange new laws and organizations attacking everyone expressing independent thinking or nonconformism in general. I think I need to get old faster.

In the spirit of Bender Bending Rodriguez I ask you... Have you ever tried just turning off the games, sitting down with your children, and hitting them? Or you could just mount the ISO, or copy the CD, or maybe just a physical/software drive lock so they can't get the CD out and eat their lunch on it?

Can't say I care mutch, but I have no sympathy with the users of TPB.

I'm no saint I do copy both games and other media, however if they are good I by them, and often at full price. it is like when people are speeding I dont care if you drive 10 Km/our more than the speed limit, just don't complain when you get a fine, gotten one in the trafic, well I did drive 5 Km/our more than allowed so why get pissed. When you do something that in the end is illegal consider the price, when you are not willing to pay the price then don't do it, in any other case just shut up and pay up.
