    This probably won't interest anyone but me, but could you check if Lynnfield supports ECC memory? :)

    Sure thing - as soon as we have fired it up I'll give it a try with the ECC DDR3 I have left over from the Xeon W5580 review.

    I still cannot see how 2 different sockets can be win?
    I really liked starting out with a small cpu when coffers was empty.

    I couldn't help but notice that the IHS appears to have less contact area and it isn't nearly as uniform either. I wonder if this could cause it to pop off while under extreme conditions?

    Also, what's with all the contacts on the top of the cpu package? Why are they there? Or are they there for thermal reasons?

    They would most likely be test contacts so that they can test the CPUs before shipping them. The ones on top may give extra information on voltages or something.
