Was it a 512mb card as XFX shop has a 1gb version for £82.

    1gb 250

Looks like the same one that Scan have up for £120.

They also have 9600GT's for anyone on a tighter budget for £49.99

    9600GT

    Edit - - - - plus P&P mind you.:(

Nope.. 512. Judging by Bit's review of the Gigabyte 1Gb version, the advantages aren't really that great anyway. Just bragging rights if you ask me, and at 1280x1024 would be a total waste of cash.

Ah well the links are up there now anyway in case anyone else is interested.

9600GT looks good for someone with a £50 budget.

Course not, although there might be HD4830s for that price.

Still if not, the 9600GT is a great buy.

Just to jump on this thread, I have a <£60 budget for the GPU (the cheaper the better, within reason). All I'll be gaming on is Football Manager, FSX, The Sims 3 and maybe GTA IV. No resolutions above 1280x1024 probably, certainly not exceeding 1600x1200. I do, however, want the ability to run a GPU-unintensive game on one monitor whilst having the internet browser open on a second - dual DVI is essential. Up until now I'd thought the HD 4670 was the outright winner, now I hear a lot about the 9600 GSO.

What would people go for? I'm happy overclocking too if one card stands out in that field. If you mention a card, could you provide a link?

    Thanks!

9600GSO and the 4670 have been on a par with each other to be honest with the 368mb version of the 9600gso having the edge.

The 9600GT that I linked to is slightly better again.

I bought two 9600GSO's for my kids machines and one of them never even got used as I upgraded my machine and handed down my 8800GT's to the kids. My daughter got on very well with the 9600GSO (XFX 9600GSO XXX) and it played all her games @1280x1024 perfectly. Gonna put both on the sales section at some stage.

Not sure if it will handle GTA 4 at that res though as its a bit of killer, if you keep draw distances down and turn some other stuff down it might do it.

What I don't like about the Nvidia's is the requirement to connect it to the PSU. Do you know if this - http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/400W-Corsair-Power-Series-PSU-ATX-PS-2-UK-Version-3-year-warranty - will fit the 9600GT?

Yes I forgot that the 4670 doesn't need any external power.

Scans specs for that PSU states that it has one 6 pin pci-e connector so should be fine with the 9600GT.

As Antony pointed out in the UK Sale Forum, a 9600GSO for £37. Granted, GDDR2 (as we ALL pointed out), but I doubt your missus will be after Crysis any time soon, and this thing will certainly handle WoW and EVE (FYI, I trialled WoW on a 7600GS with 256MB GDDR2 and had a perfectly playable framerate for 10 days, although that was at 1366x768).

Then why not get the DDR3 version (albeit with its older 8800GS moniker) for less here?

There's a slightly higher set of clocks on that one too! Gasp! Gosh-darn you, XFX, ruining Asus's plans!

Tbh, I think the retailers have been ordered to dump these cards ASAP. So, anyone need a budget card? Go nao!

I'd have gone with that cheap Gainward HD4850 GS, but whatever rocks your boat... :)
