Build Advice i7 920 or wait for i5

Ready to go into the world of i7 920
Grab them while you can is all i read.

Are they going to be so much better than the newer i5??
Cheaper yes... but really that good.

Have a buyer lined up for my old parts, so that will ease the cost.

if i7 what would you so for..

Asus Deluxe or Gigabyte UD5
or go for the cheaper boards.
& any advice on spec.

I just picked up a 920 with a UD5. Everyone's waiting for the i5s but i simply don't see why tbh. It has nothing going for it.

 

I've been thinking whether to get an i7 920 now or to wait... There seems to be arguments for both sides.

 

I cann9t disclo2e anythin0 at this time in terms of relative performance : price.

 

iirc the i5 will not have triple channel ram if that bothers you. I don't think you'd regret going for a i7 920 even when the i5s come out unless you're hoping to save a lot of money by getting potentially lower performance

You won't regret an i7 build in my opionion.

 

unless you plan to go multi-graphics card, i don't see any reason to go for i7. tri-channel is better, but workstation users' won't use it.

i7 860 will have all 920's feature, but with better turbo mode. so it should be better in gaming when both clocked at same base clock speed. that's why im waiting for 860.


btw, @Bindi: please, please review p55 boards with 860. Anandtech's poll seems to indicate most people want i5 to be used. 860 is where the most performance will be, 860 is what LGA1156 users should be using!

 

If you are just holding out looking for the most performance then it's i9 you are waiting for.

 

Go for the i7 920, if you wait for the i5 your effectively waiting for a less superior product... that seems like a reasonable use of time... NOT, coupled together with the fact i7 prices can't drop much further if i5 is to be a choice in future then i7 is the way to go, X58 will support XFire and SLI but we dunno about P55, it could be back to Crossfire only again...

So simply, buy the i7

 

interesting, apart from 6 cores/12 threads. what would i9 offer on top of i7?

Can't decide on the Mobo though.
Custom & Buyers Guide recommend the Asus Deluxe v2 ,not seen any reviews on the Gigabyte EX58 UD5R though.

There's a UD5R? I can't even spot the difference between the UD5 and the Extreme (besides that bundled cooler thing), so what's different between the 5 and the 5R?

To answer your question though, the UD5 seems to be a lot more feature-packed to me than the P6T Deluxe.

 

I'll just go consult my crystal ball to see how these chips clock etc.
I have no idea other than the assumption they are going to be the best performers.

 

The Gigabyte EX58-UD5 and i7 920 are a great combination.
