Now that CPUs are making a comeback with the advent of the Linux-only bigadv WUs I can't help but dream about getting one of these new SGI beasts.

In short - there's space for up to 80 physical and 80 logical CPU cores in one PC-sized box

    Step 1 - Sell house

Step 2 - Buy SGI Folder Uber Monster.

Step 3 - Find BIG cardboard box to live in (heated by monster)

Thats a damm nice set up for the size! Dread to think of the price though plus 20 x 5500 series Xeons and 4kw worth of PSU = you could heat a stadium lol

On the plus side 20 x W5580 Xeons running bigadv's potentially could push out around 400,000+ PPD!!! (with the bigadv bonus)

OK so Christmas is on its way, If I buy the chassis I wonder if family and friends will buy me the blades? :naughty: hahaha..... dream on.....

    You've got £10k for the chassis & extra psu's & fans :jawdrop:
The bl460c's are what you want £2.5k + the extra cpu, HDD's & RAM.
    16 of those will fit in one c7000 enclosure (although you'll need 4x psu's & 10x fans).

Should be good for 600-800k ppd

The other thing is it will draw a hell of a lot less power than the equivalent PPD from GPUs. Being Intel CPUs with ECC registered RAM they'll also be far more reliable.

OK so who's clubbing together with me on this to buy one?

LOL as if. Damn they're nice though. Maybe I'll sell the car and go all public transport and bus, train or cycle everywhere just to get one :hehe:

It kind of reminds me of the Sun microsystems idea that you can get a transport container delivered to a site with pretty much whatever amount of computing power you need pre- installed in it. You just hook it up to the power and network of your building and you've got a supercomputer at your disposal.

EDIT: google wins again - they call it a datacenter container and there's some info on them including a picture of one here

Once I've finished writing up this year's Dream PCs I might give SGI a call and see if they might send one in the review :)

We don't usually review servers, but it's such a monster it could be worth a look...

I love the ability to have 960GB on memory, basically 1TB!

I take 10 of these beauties!

Good idea to review one and have a play to earn some extra PPD for the team :D

I would be interested in reading a little bit about servers in the mag so you got my vote ;)
