Just a quick update while I have the time.
Before continuing on the front panel, various bits need to be made, partly to
solve a problem that was unforeseen and also to support the levers that will
allow the front panel to pop out and lift up.

The first part is a bracket that will add extra support for the nose and also be
the fixing point for the pivot on the chassis. This is cut from 3mm for a couple of
reasons. Firstly to be strong enough, after it's cut out to hold the nose and the
rail for the pivot. Second, to clear the trim piece on the lower front of the chassis.



An extra deep and wide score line was dug along the bend line, and then it was bent
in my trusty brake.

The bend had to be done before the openings were cut to avoid distortion.
Then the openings were cut using drill, jigsaw and files.





It won't cut down too much air on the intake side. This part is mounted with
the same screws that hold the fan body.





For the lower pivot support I was going to use the same "U" channel as the
lower rail on the top, but this is too high, so some bar will be used.



But I've run out of time.

Whoa, whoa whoa...time out. You said your brake would only handle 2mm thick material - You sly dog .

When I did a test bend of 3mm 6061, I got some tearing in the metal (I don't know the official term). I am guessing you are using a different grade, but still, this is no small feat. Looks great!

 

Well.... He does say that he made a deep score line, which means that essentially the material bent was less than 3mm.

Either that or I completely misunderstood.

In any case, the masterpiece seems like it's nearing completion. When should we schedule the great fanfare?

 

Very true, but he "agressively scored" the 1.6mm stuff as well. I am not dogging him, I just wanted to point out that his homemade brake is better than most off the shelf varieties

Never been a Woody person... (Cheapskate, NO! lol )
But a couple of wooden cases has caught my attention, and this is really one of them.
The use of wood, acryllic and aluminum has come together perfectly in this!
What can I say; it's just beatiful!

Yes you are right shomann, 3mm material would stretch the hinges and oval out
their mountings. It would also tear around the bend unless the bend radius was
increased to something I couldn't use anyway. The bend line was heavily scored
as usual for a tight bend, but this time the hacksaw was brought in and a big, wide
trench made. I guess about 1-1.5mm deep and 1.5mm wide.
