I like the idea of mounting the rad sideways, but I don't and will never enjoy acrylic cases. We have a few here at work and I refuse to put anything in them! But to each their own, hope it all works out! I also feel the pain with the car, been there and done that lol.

ok so its time for some little updates.

i`ve been pretty busy lately been on holiday and setting up for self employment plus the fact that as threre's been a lot of public holidays recently i`ve had to be out taxi driving a lot so work has progress pretty slowly.

however i have managed to squees in a little time for my mod

first thing to do was to lap my CPU and o god does it look nice. (shame i`m never gonna see it)


started by drawing a cros on it so i can see where th high spots are

stuck my wet and dry to a wooden board (glass being unnecessarily OTT IMO)



as you can see the chip was quite badly bowed so this should work well for me



and after a good few hours rubbing ended up with this


full load temps before and after @3.4Ghz on air
now i know some ppl go all out for the polished look but to me this is a little over the top.
also some may have notice i didnt do my water block...

as i bought it off ebay the seller had kindly done this already and after a quick test fit it seams to be done very well

while i was doin this i also took a look at my GPU water block and notice to my horror that the contact area of the water block (an old MCW55) is a good 10mm smaller all round than the chip its self and raised by about 4mm from the main body of the block and the screw plate doesn't fit my card
clearly this just isnt going to work.


you can see from this pic the block is not in full contact with the chip
i know most of the inner workings are in the middle of the chip but this just wont do

luckily the copper is very thick in this area so its off to the local engineers to be ground down to fit and this should also give me better performance due to the thinner copper
(sorry for got to take pics after it came back but it works well)

now that just leaves the issue of the screw plate retention system not fitting onto my card i thought about re- drilling the holes to fit till i found that swifect being the great thinkers they are had already solved this problem for me and released an updated screw system just for me (how nice of them)



any way for my next trick i`ll be cutting out the front, top and rear fan holes for the case
as i said i`m not great with a jig saw so i`m gonna have to find a way round this (already have) so i`ll try and catch up with the log tonight when i finnish work. any way i was supposed to start at 12:00 and its now 15:30 so its time for me to get outta bed and go to work

 

OK.. as i said power tools/ me /clear acrylic, don't mix so i`d been racking my brain for some time over this little conundrum. and i wasn't getting any where. short of shelling out on expensive specialist tools that i`d maybe only use once i didn't know what to do.

that was until i visited the yearly steam gathering at flookbourgh

the steam gathering for all those who don't know is an event held locally once a year where all manner of traction engines, old military vehicles, vintage cars, tractors, bikes you name it, converge on a massive field to be given a good coat of looking at by all manner of people from kids to fully fledged anorak wearing weirdos.

its also stocked to the gills with auto jumble, craft and tool stalls.
i could spend hours just looking through boxes of stuff even though i have no idea they do. i bought loads of useful (not so far) little knick knacks and thingamajigs.

but the thing i bought that was prised to me over all else was a hole saw kit ranging in size right up to 127mm and for the measly sum of £5.99 how could i refuse



ok so 120mm is a little on the large size but as you cant get them in 120mm versions without buying a diamond tipped one (over kill) this was what i was going to use.

i started with the back side of the case knowing full well that any of my fcuk ups would be hidden and this is where i made my mistake
FOR GOD SACK MAKE SURE IT TIGHT IN THE DRILL

i had to suffer as i watched the hole saw slide out of the drill chuck at full speed, land on my case and spin all over the place like a top while i was powerless to do any thing about it

luckily some t-cut brought most of the scratches out
i fitted the fans bolted to old fan casings to offset them and attached the rear fans to the rear of the case thus making the red secure in the case.




now it was time to cut the front. i`d originally planned on fitting all the fans to the rad but decided once id offered it up it just didn't look right so i went for attaching the front fans to the front of my case which worked much better



measured up and cut the top exhaust fan


now all that was left was to put every thing back together and start testing.

i`d already bench tested the loop so i knew it was working so it was time to install. i`m a bit short on pics here as i just got carried away with trying to get it all finished

well this is it folks the end of my epic build its been a long time coming and a lot of pain and heart ache to get to where it is now (semi finished)

i dont trully think things like this ever are really finished i`m already researching SSD`s a second loop and an LCD touch screen to replace the DVD drive and fan controller.

all thats left now is for me to post pics of the finished article. but i`m off out now so you`ll just have to wait till i get back.

so common show me some love and i may just get on with it a little sooner

you did a great job on the acrylic work. you should consider some stealthing of cables and such ( I do tons of acrylic builds so I feel your pain). Do you have an drawings for your next project? Where are you located? I can hook you up with potential sponsors but you will have to show ROI (mainly exposure) for the sponsor(s).

i`ve prettied it all up since the pics were taken but as you know there`s only so much i can do lol

aw mate that would be awesome, i`d be more than happy to whore myself around every board on the interwebz to gain their products exposure, even if its just for little things. (tbh i`m happy to pay for it myself but the help would rumble it along a lot faster). i live in the lake district in the UK.
i`m still in the planning stage and i`m working with sketch up atm. i`d start a log but not sure how long it gonna take to amass parts so keeping tight lipped for now to avoid looking like a shister

na you cant buy em like that its a sunbeam tech case heavily modded. it was standard set up when i got it. i just turned the drive bays, chopped them up and re drilled the holes in the top and bottom of the case i`ve a few spare holes now but i managed to keep that to a minimum with careful measuring.

well the fat lady aint sung yet dood. seriously i`m gonna put the pics soon but i been fighting with my self over which ones to choose.

most were done with my 5mp phone cam so there a bit grainy but i borrowed my mates SLR and took some sweet ones that i`ll save till last


heres a little teaser shot of the last of the wiring going in place befor the lighting ws working properly. its still a mess here but i hope it`ll keep you all interested till i win this battle

Darn nice!

I really like the design with the drivebays rotated. To bad the sidepanel where you can see your hardware is UV. I really dont like that.

yeah i didnt like the side panels either, you`ll see if you scroll down through the pics that i`ve cut it out now and i have the original side, a clear one, or how i have it mostly just open to the elements

Maybe its a good idea to get some dust filters before the air gets into the rad. A rad is a PITA to clean.

Turned out awesome mate Really enjoyed this build, shame it's finished but the results are great! You're braver than me making an acrylic case

as you`ll know your self once this bug is in you, the urge to modify everything in life is just too great a pull to resist.

i`m trying to work out how to find the space inside a star bug model (from the series "red dwarf")
to put a mobo, power supply and all the gubbins required to run an OS.
