WTF? You feel aggrieved that they ask for your money before letting you play it? Do you not see the hole in your logic there. More to the point, if you didn't like it, why did you finish it? It's people like you that are precisely the reason why developers are abandoning PC gaming.

I'm just going to quickly throw this out there; after what I'm guessing is a third to half way in, I don't actually think the SP is all that. I'm anticipating feeling pretty short changed by the end of it. Couldn't give a rats about MP. Even if I did, sounds like I'd hate it. Too many years of CS mean I'm allergic to lag.

What? I have nothing to add to this thread that hasn't already been said a million times, but this stands out. I play a fair bit of CS:S and TF2, and, er, in the former at least, hackers are not 'rare' and VAC doesn't 'fix' the problem particularly well either. Hackers are inventive - the sport is in beating VAC, not in playing the game - and nothing if not adaptable. The lack of ability to voteban or adminban is going to be a problem given the predicted popularity of this game.

[EDIT]Having now read the entire thread - wow, there's a lot of pent-up annoyance here. Why take it out on the staff, though? The SP looks sufficiently good that I'm waiting for a Steam price drop (well, the end of term at least) and then it's mine.[/EDIT]

After playing MW2 for a day, I can safely say that sticking with MW1 on the PC won't be a big deal.

Did no-one else notice the SP was pretty much retarded 13 year old OMG that's cool wtf lol!!!!1 type crap?

2nd mission, all fun stealthy snowy, questionable item (heartbeat sensor), slightly annoying bit where it doesn't work unless you stop in the right place, poor design, but okay. Suddenly SNOWMOBILE ESCAPE ENDING IN MASSIVE JUMP.

Sure, I don't expect realism from CoD games, but jesus christ, it was a bit too stupid for me, seemed like James Bond references + XXX + Various movies with Nic Cage in + Generation Kill + Shooter. Not an entirely bad thing, but it ended up just feeling very derivative and like a pile of movie references tied together.

6/10 for my money, passed 5-odd hours, but basically meh.

As far as the MP goes....

I've run a dedicated server for a gaming community for almost 5 years now, I replaced it when cod4 came out as it was getting a bit slow.

This is probably useless information, but it's also important, the majority of dedicated servers are run by people like me, people who enjoy games, playing them with their mates and want a nice consistent game - there's no torrents running on my server, just a handful of game servers and a teamspeak server, there's no housemate on wireless downloading donkey porn, there's no connection drops from people using the phone. It just sits there, hosting games, all day, every day.

Anyway, dedicated servers for most gamers I know aren't about dipping into random games until finding one that works every night.

Mostly (IME) people will jump on random servers until they find a good one (that has rules they like, no lag, good admins etc.), add it to their favourites, then have that as a first port of call when they play their game of choice.

Over the months or years, they'll amass a decent list of good servers, perhaps they'll join the community that runs their favourite server, or just pop by the server every week and stick their heads on teamspeak when they feel like it.

This IMO is what's lacking with MW2, there's little scope or support for communities, many are too big to get away with 6v6 (12v12 is probably a good number) and the lack of dedicated servers removes any consistency, which is the other important thing with dedicated servers.

Oh, and another thing, notice the splash screen on MW2? they reserve the right to stop supporting online play whenever they like. That's a bucket of arse.

My community still plays CoD:UO now and then, we have been known to host and play the ship occasionally, remember that? there's 11 public servers left now. AvP2? once or twice.

So, apart from the iffy MP due to poor quality bandwidth (did I mention my server never lags, but players sometimes do?) and the lack of support for communities, and the fact we'll have no way to play as soon as activision want us to buy CoD9.

    Yeah, no thanks.

Now, Just to end seeming like a borderline rational human being, I personally have no issues at all with making games easier to find for people.

I like it, I like being able to open L4D, have it display a list of my group's servers and let me pick one, doesn't matter to me how I choose to play on a dedicated server, but it does matter that I can choose which I play on.

What I don't like is the massive removal of choice in the name of easier server finding, that's bollocks, quite frankly, there's no need to remove choice, just add a lobby and p2p for people who want to use it, let the rest of us play on real servers, run by people who know what they're doing.

All in, lots of potential, but with the removal of the core parts that make PC gaming work, basically worthless to me.

I did find it amusing that there is a 'boycott MW2' steam group and when checking it out yesterday, the majority of people in-game at the time were playing MW2 :)

Can't blame bit-tech for liking the game if they felt it offered good value for them, but am convinced that the multiplayer will have less long term appeal than COD 4 (most people who say they love MW2 seem to be indicating that multiplayer gaming doesn't really interest them anyway). Maybe that, in the end, is what IW/Activision wanted. A game with a very limited shelf-life.

    Greetings!
    Yep.
And the player returns to the server, creates links with the other regular players, joins or not a clan, ...
Its like the Cheers TV series song:

    Another happy Aussie customer:

The guy has been living in a cave for the past few weeks and thought that Activision/IW had let him down by not providing enough servers in Australasia. I would have loved to see the look on his face when he found out that there weren't, and never will be, any dedicated servers on the horizon.

By some of these comments I'm glad I bought Borderlands instead.

No dedicated servers in that either, and it's even worse - it uses gamespy! And it's only 4 player multiplayer! But of course, no tidal wave of negative press to get everyone riled up and angry. Oh, and it's an excellent game in it's own right of course (and more addictive than cheap crack from what I've been told).

Well, MP doesn't kill itself, regardless of dedicated support. And that's not exactly a game with 32 player maps and piles of cheating.

I expect the difference is (from what I've seen, anyway) borderlands is primarily co-op, doesn't matter if the host has a 50ms advantage, or 500ms for that matter.

Borderlands MP isn't what COD should be comparing itself to. Borderlands can just about get away from it, because it is a different type of game - but it isn't great. CoD can't get away with it because PC users have had a number of generations of the franchise with far superior MP - give us extra features, don't take them away!

You make a meaningful point however - some other games have already adopted the same approach as CoD have taken. But rather than use that as a reason to excuse CoD, it should be a reason to condemn those other games.

The fact is that P2P gaming limits the game at best, and at worst cripples the game - particularly those who are in the slower lanes of the information super-highway.

Looked in my friends list last night (x-box) and of the 12 that were online 10 were playing MW2. Might have a look in Macro tonight for it, still haven't decided (good review though guys).

I think that it's a no-brainer if you are on the xbox - it's probably near the high-watermark for that platform. The shortcomings are only ever going to be apparent to the to the pc crowd.

A good review. Played the MP for last 3 days and I can now say, without doubt, IWNET is barely adequate for the casual gamer and a bitter, albeit expected, disappointment for us PC gamer enthusiasts. I will continue to play it until Bad Company 2 come out.
