So then, the title says it all. Just throw some recommendations on good movies. I saw a thread asking B-movie recommendations, but I'm not into that sorta stuff, so I figured I'd make a new thread.

What good movies have you seen lately? Maybe I've missed something. Genre doesn't matter much, I just don't enjoy horror and most old films (70's and older) make my eyes bleed.

I say it in all film recommendation threads, and I'll say it again: Letters From Iwo Jima. Epic film.

Enemy At The Gates? Gone in 60 seconds? I have to admit those wouldn't be high up on my list for recommending.

The new Bond films are actually good: Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. Just pretend that Brosnan never happened(Except for Goldeneye).

    The Boat that Rocked

Saw it recently, was pleasantly surprised. It's refreshing to watch a film without Michael Bay levels of CGI and explosions. Also, trailer.

depends on what mood your in, enemy at the gates is not to bad story easy to follow, gone in 60 seconds easy watching no store line ;) and great cars

its hard to choose some to recommend when not sure of mood, i have about 500 films ranging from
    complete dross (enemy mine) to
    classic (original italian job/zulu) to
    epic's (LoTR) to
    comedy (american pie)

it really depends on the mood unfortunatly taking out horror films kinda knocks a lot of my films of the list - still trying to find the film that scary the cr@p out of me

also 1+ for Leon and Coach Carter

however just had a quick lookup of your recommendation Krikkit and i think i iwll try and get hold of it as well seems to have passed me by and looks interesting

Voluntary Pariah; Out of those I've seen and really loved Leon and Batmans. Also seen The Island, it was still fairly ok. I really should see the new Star Trek, I have never watched the tv series, but I've understood the film is pretty decent as-is.

Krikkit: I went to see that when it came out and tbh wasn't too impressed. Can't remember what was wrong, though.

Also seen Enemy at the gates, gone in 60 seconds and Juno. The first was just rubbish, second was a generic nobrainer and the third was ok. (again, IMO)

Just watched Fight Club today to cure the hangover. Also liked Casino Royale, but Quantum of Solace was just silly IMO. Sure Bond is always Bond, but the storyline was just off.

I'll have to take a quick look at what the other films look like, the Boat that Rocked has also been on my to-see-list for some reason which, again, I can't seem to remember right now.

Thanks for the quick feedback everybody!

OH BTW here's my IMDB voting history, it should give a pretty good idea of what I like. I suppose I have a pretty generic taste as most of my high-rated films are also high on the overall top250 list.

Had a good giggle at Land of the Lost the other day. Don't expect anything amazing, but it's a cute little story with a good few laughs.

    Cannot forget Watchmen, obviously.

And finally, if you're into horror with a bit of a romantic twist (not overtly sappy either) then check out Let The Right One In. Truly epic story telling there.

ok so from the quick review of those films that you liked, it appears you like a broody/troubled main charactor,
    Leon - Assassin with issues
    Batman - well bruce wayne/batman
fight club - well no need to explain

right will have a think about this see what pops into my head

If you fancy a good giggle with a few friends I can highly recommend Zombieland once it's out. I saw it at the cinema and it's megalols.

    Have you tried framerater?
It is a glorified check list of IMDb's top 250 films and a good way to watch a wide variety of films.

Seen and liked all. From those three I'd say Inglourious Basterds was the weakest link, but then again, the hype was crazy and I still don't know what I was expecting from Tarantino  The storyline just seemed to take a turn mid-way through when suddenly it was all about the grande finale. Maybe I didn't get something.

No I hadn't, but now I have. I've been looking at the top 250 list in IMDB every now and then, and even picked some films just because they're high on the list (namely The Shawshank Redemption and Schindler's list) but the problem is that I just can't stand the old films. All the over-acting and washed colors just ruin the experience for me. Call me constrained or what ever, but while I appreciate that the classics are classics, no storyline just seems to justify the eyestrain I get from those films.
