Expect the 300 series to be a massive rebranding spree for n-REBRAND-Vidia.

I wonder if they just stick a bunch of numbers and words into a hat, and each CEO pulls out one word/number and put them together

Pretty obvious really. The GT300 parts we've already seen (ie: the mobile parts) are all DX10 re-brands of GT200 cards. As such, we can expect to see the 300 series being desktop and mobile GT200s with a new name, and the GT400s are the new Fermi architecture cards.

Why not just call the 580 and 570 to compete with AMD's branding?

tbh I don't really care what it's called. If it can perform well, that's all I need. It does seem a bit weird to miss out 300 though with the exception of the 310.

Actually, the GeForce 300 series was the competition from nVidia against ATi's 5000 cards. However they failed and totally skipped it. So This 400 series will compete against ATi's 6000 cards!

Sounds about right to me, the 300 series are out already, there redone versions of the 200 series with DX10.1 support.
It would be more baffling if they names these 300 parts tbh.

They didn't have a 100 series before the 200 series... I'm guessing they are just doing even numbers, they sound better.

And it makes the jump sound bigger.

It's the even number cards that have always been kickass, gf 3, 5 and 7 were a bit of a yawn.

Yes but the thing is, you know what you're buying. Ordinary consumers who have a small bit of knowledge but want to get into upgrading don't have a chance at understanding all the naming tripe. Plus Nlolia are smart on the marketing and know if they start calling it a few numbers above people will automatically think it's a world of performance ahead. It ain't big and it ain't clever.
