Scratch Build – In Progress Ash stealth mediacenter. Small PC hardwareupdate 13/6-10

It will have no effect, talking of a period of 5 years. The reason i used aluminium and vener, plus MDF boards is exactly that. Massive wood dont like changes in temperature. The method i use with contact glue and vener doesnt care. Its a rarely used combination, but if any big company is watching this thread, its gonna be copied for sure.
I can only say what i said before .
This method rocks !

Still, they nered to figure out the thinner \ glue respactables. LOVE It !!

Its not really on purpose.
As soon as i get my new wood i will hurry up on the cabinets for the mediacenter to be able to make a setup to show exactly what im doing.

 

Ash stealth Mediacenter - Part2:

Continued from Ash stealth Mediacenter-Part1

Making of the basics - The Front for the Mediacenter 1:




Having the template for the motherboard done, i wanted to get started with the chassis for the "drawer".


I remember having had used the dremel a lot to cut smaller straight lines with great succes when i was last modding some 7-9 years ago.
But with 3mm thick aluminium. Hmmmm, dont really know what the hell i was thinking.


I need heavier tools. Also its much faster using a drill to get a hole for the blade of the jigsaw go into then simply cutting close to your drawen lines.
Afterwards it just needs some filing till your happy with the result.


So starting by drilling holes.


Next cutting close to the lines.


Next i drilled the hole in the opposite end hoping the alu would release itself.
However it does make more sense to drill all holes first. Then Do all your cuts.




Doing the same process over again for access to the PS3.


Time to file up all the stuff you didnt get with the jigsaw.
Its quite a time consuming process, but the result will make it all worth it.




So just keep filing till youre happy with the result.
Im happy with this. Its not flawless, but it really doesnt matter, all i need is straight lines, since ( You guessed it ) its all gonna be covered with vener and wood.

Stealth for the PS3:


I dont want to be able to se the slot in for the PS3 blueray drive, but i need access to it offcourse. Also want to keep the warranty on it.
Obvious thing was to do some stealth for the front, and i would be able to change the PS3 lateron if i became the "lucky" reciever of YLOD.


Since this aluminium plate is only 1mm, i went with the dremel. Cutted it like butter.


Next up drilling holes to get the round edges. Had to be very precise.
Then back to filing to get straight lines and smooth edges.


The stealth will need to be flat with the front, so it will look like one and same unit.






Using a router to grind 1mm into the 3mm front was an easy task.


Next i will need to bend the 1mm aluminium to fit with both the PS3 front and the front plate for the mediacenter.




I dont have pictures of the way i bended it. Forgot to take the pictures since i was in a hurry.

The way i did it was by carefully measuring where the bends were supposed to be, then using clamps and aluminium profiles to add preasure where the bend was supposed to be.
Pretty simple and easy actually.


Before gluing the PS3stealth plate to the front i need to, you guessed it, glue vener onto the diffrent parts.


The backside of the front will have vener glued onto it also now.
The front of the front wont have vener added yet. Still have to have the whole chassis done before thats gonna make sense. Reason for this is that it needs to look like one unit. If i did it now, it wouldnt.






Having had the vener added, using chissels again to remove the vener from the holes in the front.
Next step was to glue vener to the edges.


Again using chissels to remove all leftover vener.















Keep in mind that this havent been fitted perfectly yet. I wont be able to do that till i have most of the chassis done.
Also due to a minor design flaw, ive had to change some of the design for the chassis. So im delayed for a week properly.
This meens that there will probably be another 14 days till i can continue on the log for the mediacenter itself.

Hopefully i will recieve my wood next week ( Should have already been here this week ) so i can continue on the cabinets for the mediacenter.

I hope its gonna look even more awesome, closing the last two gaps with acrylic and a white dimmed LED in it, to mix with the dimmed white light the PS3 has when its on.

For one I agree, this is coming along real nice. I can't tell what the finished product will look like either... but I think that's exciting. The headphones look great too btw. Ash is one of those woods that makes me think of a sound-room and HiFi audio, so to me it seems like a perfect choice of lumber. Great job so far.

 

Those slots are filed so perfectly they look almost laser cut Good job!

Just because its traditionally Danish design, im still gonna reach for a more modern look to it.
Melting danish design with state of the art casemodding is for sure one of my goals here.

Then when i saw the pictures i realised that the blueray logo had some problems with the corona.
Also the bend is a bit off. Imgonna redo this part of the build.
The PS3 im ok with, the bend is very perfect at least.

I'm building a clock that's gonna comprise many LEDs in concentric rings that'll form the hands of the clock. I'm using a special microcontroller programmed in BASIC as well as a RTC chip and battery backup. I might even be able to squeeze in a GPS module to get accurate time from

 

This is really not on purpose. Its due to the fact that i havent had the materials to do the setup to show what the whole concept is gonna look like.
However after having previewed the logs before posting, i at some points had a smile on my face thinking its kinda cool this way.
Now my question is, should i keep on posting logs keeping the final result kinda blurred.
Or would you like a final setup when i get to that point of the project ?

I think keep going as you are I like the intrigue of not knowing exactly how the final result will look, and seeing it grow with each new idea and new update. Keeps us coming back for more!
