I've just successfully tested my new-build using a borrowed low-end Asus EAH 3450 card and now need a decent GPU. Because they're reported to be a relatively quiet and cool high-end card, I'd planned on a GTX 275 - I do some flight simming - but they've all but disappeared - or are £200+ Is the scarcity of these cards a marketing ruse by Nvidia or are suppliers unwilling to buy in GTX 2** stock in case they can't sell it after Fermi is released or is the production/turn-over of GTX275 cards proving to be uneconomic? Or what ? Though I'm no 'techie', the article 'Inside NVidia's Next GPU' (CPC, April 2010) suggests it might be worth waiting a month or two (or more?) for NVidia's new Fermi cards, but I'm concerned that they may prove to be beyond my current budget. How likely is it that GTX 275's will come back on-stream and prices drop to a more affordable sub £200? Should I wait and see how prices of similar cards are affected post-Fermi? If NVidia don't come up with a Fermi card below £200 in the immediate future, can anybody recommend a card suitable for FS9 (or FSX) ? Or a workable 'cheapie' as an interim solution ? Apols if this is similar to some recent threads but any help and advice would be much appreciated. The cards are out of production now so there will be little stock. Look into ATI's HD5770 perhaps? They come in around £130~
that explains why scan no longer have stock of them then - is that the same for the gtx 260's as scan dont havent had any in stock for months
damn! novatech still have some stock so will be getting a gtx260 from them, i also think they have some gtx275's left. why would nvidia eol them now if they arent bringing fermi out (at the earliest) for like 3 months?
Because they are surrendering that part of the market, as they cannot compete with ATi. The real question is why you aren't buying a 5 series card..
All GT200 series cards are EOL. Fermi is delayed. AFAIK Aria still has some GTX275s if you must go Nvidia. If not the Ati 5850 are faster. If you really want a 275, this is the cheapest I could find, but bear in mind that's probably the cheapest they'll ever get (besides eBay) as retailers get rid of the last of their stock.
To answer the why did they EOL.. They lost money per sale, making an old process would've just drained more of their finances. With that said, the fact that they couldn't compete plays into this as well.
For the sole simple reason that it costs nVidia more to manufacture the chips/cards than what they can sell them for with AMD/ATi's new offerings on the table.
Thanks very much for all the speedy responses re the GTX 275. The 5770 looks a reasonable bet - any particular version to go for, e.g. HIS/ Sapphire/vapor-Xs etc or are they all 'much of a muchness'? The 5850 looks even better, but at its present £200+ its a bit over my budget. Any reason to believe it might come down in price over the next month or so? Any other obvious choices in the £150 - £200 range? Agreed...... ......and surely NVidia can't be so short-sighted to believe Fermi will be their salvation - especially as the GTX 2** series was looking so good.
Sorry, when was the GTX 2** series looking "so good"? It was an outmoded, large, inefficient design whose blatant flaws were exposed very quickly, first by ATis 4 series, then destroyed by the 5 series.
Sapphire's Vapor-X series is always a good bet. However, you DO pay a price premium for the better cooler. And considering that the HD57/58xx cards come with a pretty decent reference cooler I'm not sure if the Vapor-X is really worth the extra cash this time around. Pretty much the opposite in regard to the HD48xx series.
Scan's got some XFX GTX 275 in stock now a bit expensive I only paid around £180 last year for mine .

For high end id maybe hold out while supply of 5 series cards increase and possible Fermi release. One thing i do like and that is Asus give 3 year warranty with their cards which is better than most Ati board partners.
i just remembered - ATi are releasing the HD5830 very very soon (ie within the next month), so that will fit the 150-200 price range just fine.
only 3 years blimy i am used to 10 years and life warrenty with bfg and evga i forgot that ati have preety bad board partners
