Scratch Build – In Progress "Sidewinder"-- x-mas Image heavy [21.12]

Introduction



Well you might know who I am and one of my hobbies is making modded Pc cases. This Project is inspired by Cygnus X1 and the Sidewinder mouse.
This mod is going to be water-cooled.

I made a wooden frame so that I could see if every thing would fit and I am really glad I did so because I noticed that my side doorsany are about 4 cm too small.


the cnc router broke so we had to fix it but hers a pic of how it cuts when its broken:

Love the design.

Too bad about the router but I look forward to seeing this come together.

 

Nice design concept, fins seem to be the "in" thing with mods these days! How did you break the router? Or did you just break the router bit?

 

The router is fixed now we actually only noticed it was broken because we cut the alu, because normally it doesn't look like that but has some very nice and clean edge like in the later pic's and we usually only cut wood with it.

Well the "in" thing is just like fashion a few months ago it was copper and carbon.

How we broke the router: Well first I wanted to make some dog tags for the community I'm in and the router bit brock of, we thought the reason was because it had to do some really tight curves and gave up on them.
Some time later we cut a about 20mm thick sheet of wood. We noticed that the router bit was all black/blue. Finally as we cut the "fan fin" we noticed that something was very wrong because we cut trough a "alu plexi sandwich"(dibond) and that is soposed to be very easy if you have/use the right settings.
The problem was a wire came loss the motor which uses a "rotating current" basically turned about 3/4 in the direction it was supposed to and then about 1/4 in the opposite direction which was very bad. WEll why we didn't notice is because the motor dose I think about 10000rpm.

Any way I hope I could explain in a easy to comprehend manner.


to the update:

Originally I was thinking of making the side doors out of alu then powder it white and have the "fins" bushed horizontal and put some red led under them that the red lights under the "fins" these are the red bits in he render if you were wondering.
But with this update every thing changed. I'm using "alu plexi sandwich"(dibond) because its easer to bent compared to alu but much more expensive. We didn't hae any use dibond any more see the first "fin's" they are full of scratches so I had to use a new sheet of dibond and I'm really glad I did.

The final "fin" is gonna be powdered black and the doors are brushed.

Beautiful design. I'm happy you got the router fix, because I want to see this mod concept come to reality. It seems like you are offf to a great start.

Hey my psu and sleeving have finally arrived. I orders it from Nils two days ago and it already has arrived thanks man Thats over 40 meters of sleeve .



My new psu and HD (2x Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB, SilverStone Strider Plus ST85F-P, 850W ATX 2.3)



My next steps:
After my alu sheet arrives on Monday or Tuesday I'll be cutting the fins and then the frame.

It's 100% modular - all cables are detachable.

 

Very nice and aggressive looking design. I'm happy that you got some
inspiration from my work.
Haven't seen that PSU before and didn't know you could get one with ALL cables
socketed. It's a modders dream.

Yep they're in the box.

It was inspiring, at first when you put on the wood doors I couldn't believe you would do that but it looks even better now

I think the only two companies who make them 100% modular are SilverStone and Ultra.

Dam my alu sheet still hasn't arrived guess I'll be doing some TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding in the next few days

Seasonic does the X-series that are fully modular too.

Is it my eyes or is there insulation peeking out from behind the heatshrink on the connector that is in the PSU?

I have the DA700 - was the 24-pin cable on this PSU also badly organized, with wires running all over the place, or was it a simple 1:1 on both connectors?

 

welding Part 1

Oh that one wire yea it's peeking out a bit. It's my second time sleeving and I'm not en expert yet.
The psu cabels are very badly organized.

Today we tried a bit of alu welding (TIG) its very hard. I tried it but am very bad at it. It gets harder the shorter the distance is you want to weld. So after some trying my boss decided to do it for me because you need very much experience.





Stress test we welded "T" and broke it. The alu bent befor we where able to break it of.

Welding ALU is very hard! Good try though and keep practicing. One of the reasons, AL is difficult to work with when welding is all the warping that can occur. arrgghhh. I sure you know this. If you havent checked out my log go and see the AL welding that was done.
