Networks Cannot connect to Wireless - Acquiring network address

I've come home from university for a couple of weeks and am trying to connect to my home wireless but having problems. Whilst at my flat down at university I have no problems connecting to my wireless internet. The PC at home doesn't have any problems connecting to the internet either.

At first last night I could connect to the internet but no webpages would load - I checked the Internet protocol and was using a static IP address which I had set up for my internet at university, so I changed it to obtain an IP address automatically, but now I can't seem to get past the "acquiring network address" stage, although it can detect numerous wireless networks.

I'm a bit baffled by this and don't know where to start.

I'm running Windows Xp 32-bit.
The laptop that cannot connect is a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pi 1505. I have never connected to this particular wireless network with this laptop before, but I have connected to other wireless networks so I assume it is not hardware related.

I found this in the list of available networks >> "Computer problems? call 078*******". Its probably harmless but just wondering whether maybe somehow someone is blocking it??? Just seemed a bit suspicious, however the PC can still connect.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

Are your wireless drivers bang up to date? Some Sonys and Fujitsus I've seen hated changing security types between networks, and a driver update sorted them.

 

The wireless drivers are up to date. Besides I think both of my networks use WPA2.

It keeps trying to connect and says:

"Windows could not connect to preferred wireless network
Windows could not connect to any of your preferred wireless networks. Windows will keep trying to connect. To see a list of all networks, including others you can connect to, click this message"

 

It just doesn't seem to be able to acquire an automatic IP. If I try a setting up a static IP using the same settings as the PC I can get past the "acquiring network address" stage and connect but cannot load. I realise this may be because two computers on the same network address cannot use the same IP?

 

Can you connect to ANY wireless networks or just this network specifically is giving you the problem?

Have you tried...
Disabling/re-enabling the device?
Repairing the connection via "Network Connections?" (go to "Network Connections" and right click device, select "Repair")
Uninstalling/re-installing the device?

There's lots more options to explore, try those first and see what happens. Best of luck!

 

Also, does the router have a mac address filter set up? I always enable this on my routers.

 

In the static settings, have you set the gateway and primary dns as your router's address?

 

open up command prompt and try this while associated with that wireless network:

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /renew

flushdns can do a world of wonders sometimes. Wireless networks can be finicky so I hope this helps.

 

Just a thought, but might be a bit of nasties on the PC, alot of PCs I work with can't connect to networks, or if they do you get "Viagra" websites etc. Run a quick scan on Malware Bytes, its fantastic and picks up most crap. You never know! Failing that try driver rollback in device manager incase the new wireless drivers from Windows Updates are goosed
