Wonder if we'll see any atom quads. TBH I love my netbook. I spend most of my time on it with uni work and web surfing on it but the 1gb of ram is the problem. While DDR3 should help with efficiency, if your constantly running your HDD with pagefile, surely thats eatting the battery. Guess as DDR2 production decreases more then DDR3 will work out cheaper too.

 

I'm fed up with Atom processors, I had a netbook, and grew ever more tired of its paltry performance. I was going to get a dual core AMD based netbook which was far faster than the Atom dual core equivalent. Then I caved and went for a full fat notebook and wonder why I ever bothered with Atom. I mean sure, netbooks are light as anything, but the number of compromises you have to make aren't really worthwhile in my opinion.

Frankly, the fact an Atom can't run Firefox half the time without mega juddering makes DDR3 support irrelevant.

 

You have all overlooked why DDR3 is being added.
It has massive power savings, DDR3 uses substantially less power for the same performance than DDR2.

Of course currently this is for non portables, but it's a good test for them, and nettops would prefer lower power anyway.

 

Ever heard the phrase "You can't polish a turd"?
It doesn't matter whar RAM these Atom chips have, they're still underpowered Atom chips.

This is pretty much what I was thinking, DDR3 capabilities for a bit of cost saving and power saving(especially those low powered sticks).

 

Re performance DDR3 will make ZER0 difference, but DDR3 'should' be cheaper

 

Once again, I highly doubt they were after performance, just lower power usage. Especially in laptops where every volt counts.

 

The problem with DDR3 lower voltages is a bit of a joke ATM as dram suppliers are using old tech with low grade so DDR3 is sometimes using just as much Vdimm as old DDR2 uses

 

I think thats a requirement to qualify for the "netbook" discounted versions of Windows, its not a hard limit in the OS.

 

That's what I meant...it just hinders Win7
