Stupid question

What industrial epoxy did u use to seal the caps on the m/b??? require 1 coat or a number for a good seal???

The motherboard I bought didn't require any sealing of the caps

 

Good news folk, I patched the leak in the top corner yesterday. I cleaned up the plexiglass with some paint thinner, let it dry, then applied silicone. I'm at uni now, but the plan is to refill the tank when I get home today

Seeing as you have otherwise excellent taste in computer equipment, I was just wondering what the white keyboard in those pictures is?

On a side note, is there anything that can live in oil?
I was thinking (only for a second mind) that you could have a computer-heated aquarium, but fish don't live in oil >.>

 

It's a Razer Pro Type. It's okay, the built in iPod dock is nice, but besides that it's nothing special.

As for any creatures that can live in oil, I don't know but I doubt it I bet there's some bacteria or something that could though. Seeing as how they find bacteria living in the most extreme places, I'm sure there's some strain that could make do with oil.

 

I just did some reading about Mineral Oil on Wikipedia. Its interesting because I'd heard about people making PCs with vegetable oil as the coolant - but the huge downside of vegetable oil is that it absorbs water, so your non-conductive coolant will slowly become conductive. The Wiki article said that Mineral Oil doesn't absorb water easily so its ideal for computers. Also I presume it wasn't too expensive?

 

I'm guessing he used parrafin oil, its pretty expensive in Australia, some $200 for 25 ltrs I believe.

 

I used Shell Diala AX, which is mineral oil based and used in transformers and circuit breakers. I got it for free from work. It also smells awful.

 

Well with 3 dell monitors youll have so much sensory overload you wont notice any smells

 

Whats the cooling actually like mate? What are the temps like?

 

This is a serious build mate good effort.

 

They're actually pretty awful and I don't understand why. The CPU hits ~90C at load and the 5850's hit ~98C under load. Both of these are still under the thermal limit, but I think they should be lower. I plan on reconfiguring the fans to try and get lower temps.

You've got a reservoir and pump on that thing so your temps definitely shouldn't be that high. Granted the other systems I've found didn't have SLI or Crossfire but with a decent pump system going they were generally getting 30-40 idle and 50-70 load. Maybe Crossfire just really does add that much more heat.

I planned on doing this over the Summer and stumbled upon this post the other day during research and started reading from post one.

One interesting thing to try (I planned on it!) was that adding a bubble stone into the mix helped drop temps. People doing it assumed it was because the bubbles helped transport heat out of the oil and into the surface air.
