There was recently a thread started by BentAnat about a car that is valued from 30-40 million USD. When I read that all I could say was holy crap... Then I started thinking of all the other things I could buy with that money, and I was interested in what the rest of bit-tech would spend it on. First I would buy guitars, lots of guitars and amps. Namely an Ibanez Fireman and a Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier. Next I would buy a car of my own, nothing ridiculous, maybe a Subaru Impreza... Then I would have a house built in my hometown of Walla Walla, and buy all the furniture for said house. Soooo many CDs. I would probably hire Buckethead to play a show somewhere in Walla Walla.
...you're missing the point, but now that you mention it, I would probably donate a bunch to the local animal shelter.
Or you're missing the point. "in 2001, 1.1 billion people had consumption levels below $1 a day and 2.7 billion lived on less than $2 a day. Six million children die of hunger every year - 17,000 every day." There are people who need clean water, food and education more than you need "lots of guitars and amps." Sorry for being grumpy, I'm just tired of people saying "oh if I was super rich I'd piss all my money away on frivolous ********." It's immature and annoying.
And there will always be people who need these things. 30 million of anyone's dollars wouldn't accomplish squat in the grand scheme of things.
I'd throw a massive party and then spend the last million on something fun. On a more serious note, though. I'd buy a couple of houses in places I want to spend time in. Invest large portion of it reasonably and invest some of it in people/ideas I like. Don't really know any expensive "stuff" I'd like to buy.. A couple of cycles, but that's just a couple of grand anyway. Oh and yeah I guess I just am not a good person/humanist, 1) it just isn't my fault/problem and 2) even 30 M isn't really going to really solve any world-wide problems, just help the life of a few people...
If I had 30 milling USD then it would be as a result of one of two things. Either I'd earned it through business or industry, in which case I'd carry on doing whatever I'd done to amass that amount of folding stuff and start forwarding some to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. It's altruistic and Billbo Gates seems to be doing a good thing there. Otherwise, 30 mil in a foreign currency? It's more likely that I'd just robbed a bank somewhere in Bumsville Idaho. In which case, stuff the loot into the back of a 1964 Mustang soft top, leap into the car next to mah girlfriend and cheese it away from the cops.
Assuming it's USD: Sort out the head of GAS (Gear accquisition Syndrome) I am going through at the moment: 1*Dean Razorback Rebell Flag 1*Schecter Hellraiser V-8 1*Random 7-string 1*ESP Custom shop 1*Rick Bass Some amps, etc. After that, prolly an AMG SLS. Just because it's my wet dream of a car. Then a house or two. Possibly somehting like this. After that, I'd hire some of my close firends for 3 years to build a car that runs the Dakar. Then I'd start an organisation that works similarly to the UK's Mongol Rally. I.e. similar to the 24 hours of Lemons, just harsher, more rally, and all proceeds go to charity. Route unplanned, Windhoek to Zanzibar. That'd be my charitable thing to do. the rest i'd invest and live off interest for the rest of my life.
I would buy all sorts of frivolous ********, including an island, a helicopter and a yacht. Several cars and motorbikes and a house with enough room for about 20 dogs.
Invest 20 million for after University/ later life, being Christian I would tithe 3 million, leaving 7 million to get me through uni
oooh... I'd also probably become a dirty old man. I.e. live with various women, and get the last GF when I am 65. She's gotta be blonde, good in bed, 20 years old, and have fake b( . )( . )bs. She gets a credit card (limited, of course) and a beemer. She can looka t whateve rmenu she wants, but she eats when I say, what and how I say.
hurm.... 3 Million would pay off my college debts, buy a nice car, computer system, motorcycle, house, and rv the rest would be invested, ~27 million invested safely can yield a very livable amount of interest every year. Really, having that much money, for me at least, wouldn't be about spending it on flashy stuff, It means peace of mind, and the ability to do what I want with my life, with no need to work a job for money. I can work a job that I like, not because I need to to pay the bills
Invest a large chunk of it. Then, I'd buy a Dodge Viper ACR, and get a BMW M3 for a daily driver. I'd purchase the BMW in Germany and drive it on the Autobahn. I'd also try to hit up that Stelvio Pass and some other driving roads. I'd visit Sevilla and maybe Barcelona again. I'd pay off my student loans. When I got back home, I would build a nice rig. I'd invest in my friend's father's internet cafe business that he's been operating for several years now. I'd franchise a Dunkin' Donuts or something along those lines, maybe put it inside a local library. Maybe I'd also finally get around to applying to med school, depending on how US health care plays out during that time. I'd renew my gym membership and privately sponsor one of my long-time friends, who wants to become a competing natural bodybuilder. I'd also sponsor the racing team at my university. There should be plenty of spending money left over at this point, so I'd also probably marry my girlfriend of 5 years.
True, but just giving away 30M whatever isn't going to solve that problem. Money is a part of the problem, a part of the reason there is so much poverty in this world. There are other, serious problems, which one person with a few dozen mil can't solve. What would I do? Buy property, invest a portion of the money broadly, keep around 1/3 in ultra-safe savings, possibly gold or specific government bonds. Live nicely off the interest. I'd finish university and use the money to ensure I could choose whatever job I wanted and still live how I want to. So instead of getting a career that pays a lots of money, I'd probably move about from job to job, trying out different things, always learning new skills and having new experiences.
Korrekt. Many of the more conspicuously poor African states are in that position precisely because of foreign aid, or rather, because of their dependence on it! Live Aid, for example, actually contributed to conflict in Ethiopia as much of the aid money was used by rebel groups to buy weapons. The More You Know~*
Time to rethink my answer. I would just put into to various bank accounts, set up savings accounts for any kids I may have in the future. Put enough in a 'house fund' so I can build my dream home and furnish it. Various cars, but not too many. And I would work where I currently do. McDonalds, seriously. I love the job, the staff are great and tbh, they're pretty decent people to work for.
pay my debts and make sure I don't have access to the rest of the money before I finish uni. There's no way I wouldn't be motivated then
