I'm intersted in the matrix LCD and the sata power connectors Where did you get these from and how much? Wow, this is an amazing project! Very nicely done.. looks sweet, but wouldn't look wildly out of place in a frontroom. I was interested in doing something similar, but I wanted to have hot-swappable HDDs. Does anyone know where I can get some SATA backplanes so that I don't have to plug a cable into the hard drive each time I want to slot it in?
We have a thread on the Spanish digg-alike "Meneame.net" (http://www.meneame.net/story/video-nas-casero-de-16-tb) about the hot and the life span of those HDDs. How hot are the things inside? I'll bet it could run 24x7 for a long time. But my opinion isn't very popular.
Those WD GreenPower drives run very cool as well as quiet (which is a consideration when you have about eight of them running in a box). Stealth quotes temps ranging from 95 to 112F (35 to 45C) which is within the normal range of 5 to 55C.
Wow First noticed this on the engaget web site and I’m really, really impressed. Being a bit of a storage junky myself this is exactly what I need. Could you please explain how you upgraded the external power brick? Is this the one that came with the serner 120W psu? Also, was it easy to cut the serner connector and attach the 8*sata cables? Was there another connection in between? I’m just a bit afraid of blowing the lot ;-) Well done, remarkable piece of work and you are due all the credit you have got so far!!

Indeed, a few people made the comments about how I should have picked black drives or something but I obviously choose those drives to enable me to pack them as tightly as possible. I don't think i bought the ac adapter that's paired with the serener. I got a slightly larger 110w one. I found it pretty easy to adapt the serener- even on its little proprietary connector all the wires are color coded as they should be, so it was just a matter of bundling them up correctly and wiring the power switch.
Those people know nah-think! WD GreenPower HDDs are the ideal choice for a NAS. Speed is not as important as low power consumption (and, depending on where you put it, low noise). I have a 1TB WD10EACS in my HTPC setup. Perfect for the job. But I digress: very nice work.

im still trying to figure out how you lost 4tb of space you say it has 12.7tb useable after raid 5 8x2tb so wheres the other 3.3tb thats almost 2 whole drives....
From my experience raid-5 can be kind of funny to calculate. The usable space is roughly n-1, however the usable space per drive is anywhere from 931-1024/1TB. Here you would think that 2tb*8=16, so 8-1=7*2= 14 usable. In this case the low end should actually be 8-1 = 7*.(931*2) = ~13 usable. In this case the usable space he shows is 12.7, so I'd say he has not 4 TB unaccounted for, but rather only 300 MB (at the low end). Another way of looking at this is .931*2*8=14.896-12.7 (usable) = 2.196 TB used for the reserves. When looked at this was, exactly 1 disk capacity was used (or n-1). Enjoy
