Downloaded it on one of the macs at school. Five minutes later... lets see how that "super fast" mobile GPU runs portal
Portal runs great on the 13" MBP (new one). I'm going to try it on the new 17-incher as well, whenever I get time. EDIT: One good thing about the 13" MBP is that it doesn't suffer from thermal throttling, so the framerates don't randomly get choppy like they do on my Dell XPS 1530. $1000 Mac gaming better than a $1700 Dell
so Dell uses crappy cooling solution. any other news for us? also I enjoy this. Steam for Mac is a good thing although I'm a PC gamer at heart.
I've actually played Portal on the same GPU in my Dell lappy. It runs ok, but certainly not great. At 1440x900, I've got to turn most of the settings to medium/low to get smooth framerates. With the performance penalty that OSX seems to incur, I doubt it will be smooth at anything less than minimum image quality.
Even after the performance drop, the game always stayed over 60fps in Anand's review.. It's the least fancy looking Source game, anything vaguely recent can run it.
I got one of them 17" macbook pros but i`m not wanting to blow one of them up testing all the new games on it full whack for a marathon gaming tf2 ,css sessions. I did get it so it would be more work orientated and I wouldn`t be able to play games, now steams here though I know I wont be able to help having a blast. Any chance Bit-tech can test out how a mac lappy handles a real gaming session? Also anyone know a decent mac mouse available to use?
razor, meh. I`m going to get one of those tracker mouse things and gesture me up a portal or 2 i think. Should be different
Yeh right on!! Linux support is the real news - been waiting years for movement on that front. My Linux fanboiii flatmate will be stoked!! A Mac client might help feather Steve Job's nest even more but is completely irrelevant. A typical stock Mac GPU can just about play Sims 3 and after the Mac tax, etc., etc. The platform is so locked down it makes MS look Open Source friendly.. Bob
Linux support? Does this mean I can play Half-life games under say: Ubunto, RedHat, SUSUE? If this is the case I'm done with Micro Sugar!!!! I have been waiting for this day for the past 10 years!!!!
