I would ask for my GTX470.

In all seriousness, anyone else think a BIOS flash mod is in order?

Didn't they do that with the Geforce 4? I think it was that with almost all the range the same card but a bios on it was stopping some of the power.

its a pretty **** publicity stunt if people are getting worse cards than they are paying for.

Wow same card but only bios locked? Good way of getting hands on a decent card at a decent price!

    Lol Nvidia fail.....

Seriously though this is a bit of a balls up.

As for the last line of the article, I am not suprised at all that the GTX465 would just be a GTX470 with a few things disabled. I also assume that the final card will be hard locked (and not just bios locked).

So when they're out all you need to do is buy a 465 and flash it with a 470 BIOS? Sounds like a bit of a bargain... or you could just get a Radeon 5800 card and get real value for money

Not entirely surprising - I recently got a Radeon Hd4550 that identified itself as a HD 4350...

ive seen mobile GPUs that do that all the time. They retain all the correct clocks and info for what its supposed to be, but the name is wrong.

the thing is I really dont believe something like this would happen with unreleased GPUs. A leaked product would be on a website like this and not in a general consumer's hands. Reason for this is unlike the 4G iPhone, this is a GPU that doesnt fit in someone's pocket to easily be left on a table at a bar.

I'd almost want to consider this fake. I remember back in the day with the Xfire client being able to fake your playing a yet to be released game by changing an executable to match a game's title. This is probably done in a similar fashion. Edit a device's naming conventions so it appears to be incorrect while in real-life its a GTX 470.

Well, it might work. Some here have already made the logicial leap of reflashing the 465 into a 470. Sure the the poor guy gets to do the whole return to sender thing.

But think abt it., nVidia gets everyone to think that the 465 can be "hacked" into a 470. Bunch of ppl goes out to get one thinking it's value for money, and BAM the disabled bits are actually quite dead. But since theyd didn't actually promise anything officially... Oh and not everywhere has return policies like you guys in the UK or US.

so let me get this straight. nvidia make everyone think they can flash a 465 to a 470, but warn that by doing so it will invalidate the warranty. poor saps actually do this based on nvidias misinformation, and brick their cards with no hope of refund or replacement.

yup, they are really gonna head out and buy more nvidia stuff ;)

this card is gonna get annihilated in the benchmarks, and on price. its just nvidia trying to shift chips which failed their binning.
