Keen to see how it stacks up against the 5870. I also see Dell/Alienware are now offering 2 x 5870's in Crossfire in the M17x. Seems Nvidia have a bit of catch-up to do!

Wow Bindi, did you invent a time machine? :p

Seriously though, if these are anything like the desktop counterparts, they really aren't going to be a good idea. I can see the A&E depts swamped with 3rd degree burns on peoples' funny bits.

I imagine it will be similar to the desktop parts: too hot and drains to much battery but performs really well. TBH laptop GPU's are still sort of an enigma. I haven't came across to many reviews. same with lap top CPU's too. The article on the CULV processors highlighted that

Now where's a picture of a laptop on fire when you need one?

AKA the power draw will be ridiculously high, I'd bet.

This sort of false marketing annoys me annoys me. If it's similar to the desktop GTX 465, than call it a 465M. Don't try and make it sound better than it is by calling it a 480M. It's almost false advertising!

Also with that kind of power draw, I'd be heading for ATi if I was in the market for a new laptop.

your skybox HD add is making my netbook lag. And the alienware add before it is clearly contradicted by this article claiming to be the most powerful/fastest laptop available whilst lacking this GPU.

    Whine, whine, whine, I know...

it will be fine. note that the clocks are half of the 480. power efficiency will increase by a minimum of 2x.

Not if it's really inefficient, but you're more than likely correct.

Also, 0.5 * (say) 150W is still 75W, which sounds like an awful lot for a laptop's graphics card, especially when you consider a new Intel ULV CPU is only 17W.

Still, if it beats every other laptop's graphics performance, it's still worth considering.

I would get it, I had to choose between a either a crappy desktop + crappy laptop or decent laptop when I went to Uni so I went with a decent Laptop with a 8600GT battery life has never been good but I use the battery mainly so that I don't have to turn it off when I move between classes/rooms. My laptop running at full draws 90W (empty battery playing games for a couple hours after battery is at ~10% with a 90W adaptor.) So this isn't that bad. Plus I would think they would refine it a bit to further reduce the power draw.
Also why compare a high end GFX card with a low power slower CPU of course it's going to draw a lot more power.

In conclusion, battery life is unimportant for these kind of laptops.

I hope they don't underrate thermal output this time or there'll be another geforce holocaust...

"Or is your room simply colder than you'd like?" - accurately pre-empting the comments!

It'll be OK for a 17" desktop replacement that would normally sit on a desk and never be moved. A large enough chassis might be able to shift enough air across the heatsink, but I'd hate to think what the sound of the cooling fans will be like.
