Pay more for a less powerful card? No! Edit: Comparison. Well, turns out the 5750 isn't as bad as I thought!
The 5770 would be beaten considerably by a second hand 4870 or definitely a 4890. 4870s cost just under £70 on eBay nowadays, or 4890 of just under £100. Wasn't so long ago Scan was selling 4890s new for £130.
don't compromise, save about £40 more and get a 5770, it's a steal for it's price, if not as someone said above, the HD4870 is now sub £100 and its still a beast
Thanks for the ideas but the I am researching this card for a mate and his budget is £100 MAX but would prefer less. He is only a casual gamer. (i Have a 5770) Is a 512mb 5750 worth it?
Personally i would still go for the new 250, mainly because its new and will do every thing he needs.he will also have 15 pounds left over which is nice
if you buy the 5750 may as well stretch to 5770 tbh. Cards under £100 either ebay 4890 or get the 4850 that was recomended above at this rez your looking at loosing details whatever card you pick
The only trick is the RAM as the GPU beats the older cards ... turning everything up these days can definitely stretch the 512MB so I become pretty concerned. Probably depends on the screen resolution your friend is gaming at. If it is 22-inch or lower then the 5750 512MB should still be the best choice just because it has the latest technology/features. If it is 1080 or above, then I'd definitely be thinking going second-hand last gen - i.e. grab a good 4850 off ebay - there are some cheap 1GB cards. It will work better.
I'd say 4870 not 4850. They go as low as £70, are in budget, etc, and are much faster than the 4850. Even a 4890 - not sure what they go for second hand but Scan was selling them for £130 a few months ago - maybe it's less than that? Also, remember that 1080p is a standard resolution for 22 inch now, it's really just 20" and below where you get the lower resolutions by default (a majority of 22 inchers on scan have the higher resolution).
EDIT: I just had a look at earlier posts and saw the res - 1920x1080. If you look at the 2009 3dguru stats then the 5750 is a good choice ... but I think you'll be suffering with future games 'cause they are benching the 1GB model. If you absolutely positively need to be under £100 then pick up the second hand 4850. But really, if you are any sort of friend at all, you will stump up the extra £9 instead of a round of beer, and let him buy a 5750 1GB.

The 5750 has about the same performance as the 250/4850 etc. It beats them by a couple of fps in some games but that's about it. The 4850 512MB often equals the 5750 1GB, even at high resolutions. The 5750 is a bit of a waste of time basically. I use a 4870 (about equivalent to a 5770) and that's beginning to show its age at 1680x1050, so a 5750 at 1080 won't be a nice experience. If the budget has a definite maximum of £100 a 4850 or GTS250 will be your best bet. Really don't go for a 4870 unless you intend on upgrading that PSU, I had a 500W once and it got pretty damn hot.
I personally would avoid the 4850 - it doesn't perform as well as a GTS 250 or a 5750. To the OP: Here's your choice: 1) 5750 1GB: Probably the fastest card you'll get new for £100 and supports DX11; however it'll not be powerful enough to run DX11 realistically. 2) GTS 250 1GB: Ever so slightly slower than a 5750 but can do PhysX (although it won't have enough grunt for it on its own); it would be a good card to incorporate into a later build when the current rig gets old.
Really would recommend a 4870 if your forced under £100, the 5750 doesn't really pack the punch for games and DX11 isn't ubiquitous quite yet
Nah, working 4890s go for about £100-ish on eBay (usually between £80 and £100), and they'll beat the GTX260 easily.

A 4890 also uses more than a fair bit of power. The GTX260 and 4870 aren't exactly frugal either. Need some clarification on what's going on PSU-wise: If a new PSU is to be had then a 4890 (at least 500W to 600W depending on the CPU) is your best bet. If not, then a 4850 is about as powerful a card you really want to put in there..
Personally, I disagree. According to the power calculator, you'll only be needing about 400w for a basic system with a 4890 in. A 500w psu with the amps in the right places will be fine.
