First time i played that mission that almost literally scared the crap out of me. That and some moments in descent 2
If you do get Freespace 2, give the Star Wars and/or Battlestar Galactica (modern version) a go, they are very good.
Although it looks very dated (well it is!!!!), Elite still is one of the best, fire up a BBC emulator (or C64 like me) and you may like it even with the old vector graphics!. Other than that I enjoyed X3: Reunion and am tempted to try Terran Conflict.
Terran Conflict is a lot nicer and more streamlined, well worth a try. Elite is amazing! My favourite was Frontier Elite: First Encounters. I think there was even a sequal to that as well, but that is the one I played to death. It looked great at the time and it was an amazing game. Graphically it looks pretty terrible today though lol. I can't wait for Elite 4, it's going to be many years though sadly.
The game I am about to mention is not the best space game out there but it is a lot of fun. Although it is getting on a bit and looks pretty ancient, it is worth a go if you can find it. My advise would be to put AA and AF on max settings in your graphics cards control centre. Tachyon The Fringe.
I came in later than that, on my Pentium III Coppermine, with XvT and it was superb. Would still love it now. Best of all time is clearly Elite. Quite enjoyed Freelancer, but haven't really played anything else. When I get around to building a new machine, I'll be doing some research
I had a LOT of fun with Space Rangers 2 as well. It's technically not really in the same league as some of these other games though, but in terms of fun it was up there, maybe even more.
Elite was a damn good game, back in its time. Oolite has taken its place... http://www.oolite.org/. Whatsmore, it's expandable, using OXP packs (http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/OXP).
I've still got my boxed copy of Elite for the Speccy; loved it back in the day. Going to give Oolite a whirl, cheers for the heads up.
