Hardware Nvidia GeForce GTX 460 768MB and 1GB Graphics Card Review

FINALLY! well done nvidia for catching up to AMD with a card worth buying and undercutting them to. I hope this brings about a 5850 price cut but I've got a feeling this won't happen. More likely the GTX 460's be in high demand causeing a slow increase in price until matchin 5850's
...going to check on pricing now.

 

Having just had a scout on the CCL website at the 460, starated at £153 and going up to £202, makes the 460 pricing look a very suitable upgrade for my 8800GT.

Haven't got around to CoP yet, but clear sky is the first game i've seen in ages with an ATI logo rather than "Nvidia: the way it's meant to be played" when you start it up.

 

Good to see Nvidea back in with some serious cards, (price/performance) - if nothing else, we should at least see ATI putting their prices back down to launch levels! Oh I do like healthy competition...

People waited for this to happen and I'm actually glad, that nVidia managed to release a somewhat competitive product. ATi will now lower their prices after allmost a year without competition finally.

I see the 5770 selling for 120 USD in the short future finally

I think they are being a bit optimistic in saying it is the new 8800GT though. Ati couldn't touch the price/performance back then, things are different these days.

 

nVidia, you're late to the party. Join us, ATi got here a bit early and at up a decent portion of the snacks. Eat up while you can though, ATi looks like its put on their running shoes to get to the snack table before you now.
Be sure to play nice and don't even think about monopolizing the GPU market again.

 

This bodes well for the 470 / 480 refresh , i suppose nvidia will release the 485 / 475 to counter ati's 58xx series refresh.... good times ahead for us consumers i think.

as fingers mentioned, what will ati's response be. for me, it better be quick too.
they should have the ability to drop the price significantly if they want and destroy the 460, but will they? or will they do a small drop to get a better value to performance rating, but still leaving that door open for the 460 because it would still be a decent amount cheaper? but at least green team put something up worth making ati raise their eyebrows.

 

Would be nice to see how well it overclockes as there was a lot of word on the net about it being as fast as a 470 when overclocked?
Would this be a worthy upgrade from my 4850?

Would be nice to find out what PPD the GTX460 can produce for Folding. Seems like a reasonable price if the PPD is good. BT/CPC, you guys should be checking this with all cards from now on, as you have quite a following for Folding, as your own magazine attests

 

i would think so. at least it's faster and gives dx11. here in the us it's cheaper than most 5830's which is hilarious. ati better wake up.

i'm not a folder, but agree...seems like they do have quite a following. very surprising they dont do that now that i think of it.

 

I imagine that we might be seeing some revised GTX470/480s ala GTX275/285s not too long from now? GTX475 would be nice

 

Well reading across the various other sites and their reviews they seem to counter Bit-tech's recommendation and mostly plum for the 768mb flavour; mainly based on it's price/performance. A bit short termism that?

The more interesting question for me is how will Ati respond? The 5830 and by extension the 5770 are dead ducks without a major price drop. Likewise the 5850 is going to get somewhat squeezed depending on whether consumers go for the 768mb flavour gtx460 at well under £200 or the 1gb at between £200-£220. Scan have 5850 twin forza II at £237 inc vat. That needs to be +£20 less to compete.

Surely, it's not a question of if but of when and by how much?

 

In the context of any potential (still a big if I think) price drop from ATI on the 5770, 5830 and/or the 5850, how long does it take for a price drop from the manufacturer to filter through to retail?

Surely those retailers with stocks will have paid for the stock at a higher price meaning that it will take a while for any price drop at source to filter through?

Or is there flexibility in the supply chain to cater for an instant price drop? How does it work?

 

If Ati announce, for example, a £20 reduction on all -stock- 5770/5830/50 prices, retailers would be able to get a refund or credit note from either their supplier or direct from Ati. Not sure if cooler and oc specials would be covered but I'd be surprised if XFX etc would leave retailers in the lurch there too.

I vehemently dislike noise and heat and I'd like to hear about how the 460 does in this department. But I don't suppose I'll get to. It's interesting that the temps are a lot lower than competing ATi hardware though....
