Hello, I wish to purchase a laptop. Price range: £600-£700 General Usage: Mid-High range games, 3D design, Programming, Graphics Design. Example applications: PS CS4, 3DS MAX, Steam, Office, Bad Company 2, Spotify & Visual Studio 2010. I was looking at this: Samsung - Ebuyer But then I found this: (a decent price at PC World - what's the catch?) Acer - PC World Which is better? Cheers, Joel
The Samsung is better really - it's got what would appear to be a better graphics card (330M compared to 310M that the Acer has) and a better screen (1600x900 compared to 1366x768). Given what you're after in a laptop it's a no-brainer imo. Neither will run BC2 very well though. I know you've asked for a laptop, but do you really need one? There are loads of small desktop cases if space is at a premium.
Hello, Thanks v.much for the reply. Basically its not a full on desktop replacement it is just a laptop that I will use for work (Office, Notepad++ & Visual Studio 2010), university (3ds max, other programming languages) and friends houses (basic games). I would like a 15" screen ideally, I realise if they run games they will have to run them on low settings. Its more Empire Total war than Bad Company 2. Cheers, Joel I would definitely stretch to purchase than - but its a 13.3" screen- Ideally I would have a 15"
I've had a quick filter through the available stock at laptopsdirect, and these all look pretty good. If I had to pick one from that list I'd probably pick the Sony for the extra build quality, although I'd have to go down to PC World and compare them in the real world to see. Then again I'm very picky about my laptops.
In terms of laptop graphics - go for something higher than the ATi 5470 (I don't know comparable Nvidia cards). I've just bought an Acer Aspire 4820TG, which has i5-520M, 4GB, and ATi 5650 and it barely runs GTA:SA on medium, but handles BFBC2 on low settings well (~50FPS), at 1366x768 (14in wide). I'd recommend one, but a few days after I bought mine the price went up £100 to £850 Oh, and if you get anything from Pixmania.co.uk, I think you can use the code PIXUKSALES14 to get £14 off anything over £500 (eg, a laptop )
Good link, this one is my winner at the moment: http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Toshiba_Satellite_Pro_L650-167_Core_i5_Laptop_PSK1KE-003013EN/version.asp What do you recon?
A brilliant laptop for the price - but I am really not sure about laptopsdirect after reading bad-review after bad-review. Anyhow is there any similar specs with a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 for a similar price?
You can get the same model for £730 from CCL: http://www.cclonline.com/product-info.asp?product_id=51977&tid=frooct
I didn't realise laptopsdirect had bad reviews, looking at the google ratings it's down to poor customer care if you have an issue. No surprise there with most web stores really.
CCL are on these forums (if you look at the main forum page, down the bottom). I personally have never bought from them but they seem like a nice, honest bunch...
I've not heard anything bad about CCL, and their google ratings are much better. I'd go with them for such a small price difference.
Well that seems like the logical solution then. Just wanted to thank everyone for their assistance in locating the correct laptop.
