Nice, but the nickel looks so good! White paint will detract from the looks waterblock I think.

    :D Thanks mars bar!

    :)

    :hip:

    :brrr: cold :p

Well in most of the pics the nickel cool-ness is coming from the blocks themselves, not the backplates, and i am only powdercoating the backplates :)

    Black connector.
    BlackBlackBlackBlackBlackBlack

The white one just kinda sticks out to me.
Maybe because it's kind of clear?

    But then again..
The more I look at it the more I like it.

How opaque is the connector in person?

I think you're right about powdercoating the backplates, especially since you'll see them more easily than the rest of the block. It's not that they don't look sexy as they are, but it's just like getting some nice lingerie on your graphics card :D

And yeah, whether you go for black or white you should change that connector. It just looks a little off compared to the heatshrink on the cables, and like skreenname said it's a little translucent. I'd love to see a fully opaque white connector though, maybe you could get it powdercoated with the backplates?

    Looking fantastic.

I'd go with a black connector. Also, I'd route the tube from the radiator to the graphics card underneath the midplate. That way it won't look 'weird' with a piece of tube traversing half way across the midplate.

So, route it underneath the middle where its a bit more hidden, then pop it up straight into the graphics card.

Go with your gut! It's all good! At the end of the day when it's all said and done, you're the one that makes the choice. You've done a bang up job. lots of peeps, including me would like to see this or that. Go with your gut! Then get the wallet back out if you're not happy with it. After the mod posts are over, post a "This is what I should've done". It's modding, "nothing to get hung about, strawberry fields forever"!

I have come up with another idea, with some input from Nils at MDPC :) Wait for it, i think it will look awesome!

    Thanks oz!

Yeah you are right about the backplates - white is going to look sweet :)

You can't powdercoat plastic unforunately :(

Interesting point about the traverse tubing, however i can't put it coming straight up because the fittings would hit the rad underneath. I have also already drilled that hole for it now, so too late!

I love this post so much - it follows the 'motto' of MDPC so well i love it - no compromise :) Hi5, I shall read your post in the future if i ever i get stuck on an idea or lose motivation :)

    Update #24 - 10/08/2010

PSU backplate arrived from the laser cutters - gets rid of that ugly square mesh thingy that was there before.

Also had a new I/O plate made - the old one was a bit too small. Here i have marked out for holes to put M3 inserts in.

Drill them out to about 4mm.

    Grab two of these

Then whack them with a hammer! There are little teeth that dig in and hold the insert in place.

Ticking more things off my list of little jobs to be done before painting - here i am marking out holes in the front bezel supports.

Here you can see them screwed in with the velcro applied

I also had a plate cut out by the laser guy to cover up the CPU backplate holes and make that area a bit neater.

I realised the other day that with the motherboard installed, you can't access one of the screws that holds the 24pin i/o guide to the cable plate. To solve this, I tapped the cable plate to M4 and drilled a 4mm hole through the guide so i can screw it in from the back.

Next on my list was the drain port. This idea ended up coming from my friend Simon | Laine. It comprises of a rotary 'q', a passthrough, a 90 degree compression, a stop fitting and a straight compression. This gives a nice solid solution where all i have to do is put the case over a bucket, open the port and the coolant will drain out.

It should make tubing nice and simple too.

Here is the passthrough after i opened up a hole with the step bit.

After mounting the fitting combination to the floor.

This should result in straight tubing between the rad and pump.

Here is a hole i cut in the drive bays to allow cables for the FC5 and DVD drive to pass through.

With the SATA cable plugged in.

The bay covers will hide any cables running behind there.

Nice solution for the drain port, works really well. BTW what are those hammer on threaded inserts called and where did you get them? They are really cool.
