Hardware Control Your PC With Your Mind

Ah so these newer devices are actual "mind- control" type devices while the OCZ only reads muscle movements. I hope these things turn up at game shows so I can have a go at them.

 

Just more proof that any culture that uses mushrooms and other mind altering substances pwns.

 

Anyone know if this thing could be used as a generic computer 'control' system for quadroplegics / people with 'locked in' syndrome? (or examples of it being used for that anywhere?)

Eh, more EEG nonsense. A little beyond the old 'just reads the muscles in your brow' headsets, but not much. Call back when SQUID-based MEGs are commercialised, or something with a little more resolution than, well, none at all. Functional BCI research has moved beyond the EEG for anything other than publicity toys.

so its a more fined tuned version of OCZ NIA? I want to see this stuff used more for people who cant move their arms and so forth to aid them getting more things done.

 

Mind control MIGHT be the thing to challenge those RPG-asians. Being able to actually multitask (clicking in one corner, thinking of flanking the enemy from the two sides or something) would be superb. However it'll be years and years before/if anything useful will come out of this.

 

If it ever gets to the point where we can control games with our minds then drug dealers will be happy. Upper-type drugs sales like Speed will go through the roof, with people wanting the 'extra edge' of concentration in games ect... You may laugh but they really do improve concentration. People with Attention Deficit Disorder get Amphetamines on prescription for extra focus (Adderall for instance).

 

Would like to see a review as to whether it actually works..

 

They're currently using the device to write said review. I'd give em a few months

 

IF (take note, in caps for a reason) it actually works it could well be interesting in the likes of a virtual world MMO. But I very much doubt such devices would be so readily available so soon, bit of a wait at least.

i can just see it now or hear it, listening to radio 1 online with anny mac and her dumb dub-base trash , and without warning you send an email telling her xactlly what she can do with her dub that no body can dance to , or what about the online gammer knows a few secrets about a fellow gammer online and his lass, letts just say john terry type of secrets, what is to stop this info being posted quick time . amd i bet every body would get caught out by the porn search of laddy-gaga

Dude what!?! EEG is actively researched in BCI. MEG is way too big and can not be used in a real world setting due to the sensitivity of the superconductors. MEG has slightly better spatial resolution but the temporal resolution is the same as with EEG. fMRI great spatial resolution much better than MEG or EEG but miserable temporal resolution. Furthermore the cost of fMRI and size make it a no go. If they manage to make cheap room temperature superconductors then MEG and fMRI may be viable otherwise forget about it. People are starting to move to embedded electrodes but thats a story for another time.

 

That's pretty much every culture on Earth. Apart from Africa, where there are no magic mushrooms. Although they do have Iboga.

 

Hence why I mentioned SQUID-based MEG, not fMRI. Among other things, MEG can measure both radial and tangential currents, something that is fundamentally IMPOSSIBLE for EEG. Resolution is also much greater (based on magnetometer sensitivity rather than electrode number), and temporal resolution is absolutely absurdly fine, given how incredibly responsive SQUIDs are.
As for practicality of SQUIDs, there are already LN2 cooled thin-film SQUIDs in use for materials analysis, and with a properly shielded room there are FREE FIELD magnetometers used for measuring brain activity in real time. That's like an MRI without the 3-tesla field magnet!

 

I'm no expert, but wouldn't a device relying on incredibly fine-tuned, incredibly sensitive magnets be somewhat handicapped if you stuck it next to a tower and in the middle of a 7.1 surround sound setup of speakers?

In fact, that concern extends to all these devices generally; they work fine in test environments, but has anyone checked that they work fine in a room full of high-power EM-generating equipment?
