Films The Hobbit (Or There and Back Aagain)

It's all official, filming starts next year in NZ, the actors guilds have been buttered up and the first casting details (apart from the fact that we knew who was playing Gandalf already) are being released:

Interesting. Very Interesting. Dr Watson is Bilbo, Lucas (or is that John?) North is Thorin and Kili is some Vampire from Bristol.

 

Seem like a fairly low rent cast, which isnt a bad thing in anyway - Should be interesting. I guess they'll be saving the budget for the masses of CGI!!

 

Personally, can't wait. Loved the LotR trilogy

I think most of that CGI budget will go to Smorg

Play all 5 one after another. The Hobbit is being split into two films.

Also, it looks as if the shennanigans with the NZ acting unions isn't over, and that it might be filmed here in blighty rather than Middle Zealand .

Yes - Martin Freeman played Arthur Dent in the movie version of HHGTTG.

 

My worries exactly - will he have time to be filming new Sherlock if he's off being spanked into doing the Hobbit?

 

Sherlock was kind of on its way to 100% flop, though. You could see it getting worse and worse - which is an achievement in itself when you only have to make 3 episodes. Felt gimmicky.

Wrong thread for all of that, though, I suppose.

I and everyone I know read The Hobbit as a kid, so this one has a lot of expectation riding on it. I remain on the fence - Peter Jackson gets it right sometimes, then not so much other times (c.f. King Kong). Sadly, as with so many modern films, it may be made or broken entirely by how the CGI is employed.

 

Martin Freeman is brilliant, and im sure he will do a great job as Bilbo... eeeeeeeee

 

They have a lot to live up to with a generation spanning classic like this.

I agree. I also think Identity went the same way. 1st episode kinda good, then downhill. Like the writers had one good idea but the producers pushed for more.

I agree he is. But, I really worry that I've seen him in too many things for him to elevate to a hollywood role. Like Simon Pegg in Star Trek. Kudos to Pegg for getting in on the act, but he will always suit typically English roles, and I didn't like his character one bit.

they compressed a 5 book series into 3 films, yet split the single book prequel into 2 films... crazy

 

saw this coming from a mile away, but really hope they do Tolkien justice. this is one of the best books in the world, and THE most well developed realms.

A mediocre result is unforgivable.

But I am properly going to be watching it several times anyway.

 

Still haven't read the book. Read all three LOTR books something like 3 times now but I haven't touched The Hobbit as yet.

The LOTR films are remarkably good for the length of the books and detail included so hopefully this'll turn out similarly, or maybe better.

Actually, The Lord of the Rings is 6 books. I have an old printed copy with all of them in one big book. Read them countless times. 2 books per story part.

But the Hobbit is a sufficiently awesome enough book to be split. I'm happy.
