Am I the only one disappointed by these releases? I want to play my games at max detail, and it looks like I'll need to wait for a 6970 to be able to do that - at a premium price.
well they were not high end releases everyone knew they were mid-range ones so we wernt expecting it to sit on the GPU throne or anything
You spend £200 on a GPU that can only play SOME new releases at max settings and that's okay; how would you feel if you bought an Xbox 360 5 years ago only to discover that it can't play ANY new games? Microsoft then tell you that you need to purchase a new console every one or two years otherwise your new games turn into a slideshow. So let's say you've done a bit of saving, finally received your new £200 card, pop it in, turn on Civ 5 and crank up the settings, and your amazing frame rate is... 34fps. Hey, how about Call of Pripyat? 40fps. Crysis Warhead? 41fps. I'm sure that would make any gamer feel fantastic. Yes, the richer gamers who have a cool £350/£400 to spend on SLi/Xfire/a 5970 are more than happy with their 70+ frame rates, sadly not all of us are that rich.
well those frames you have quoted are perfectly playable ones and if a mid-range card can do that @ 1920x1080 then thats pretty good.
You don't have to play on max settings you know. Its also a bit academic as if you don't have £300 to spend on graphics cards, you don't have £300+ to spend on very high resolution screens that require those kind of cards.
You complain about those frame rates? Most console games can barely be optimised for 30FPS and fall down during most stressing moments, also they can't handle jaggies and never have any AA.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not laying down the law and demanding a whole shakeup of the industry, these are just personal annoyances of mine - I understand PC gaming IS an expensive hobby to stay in and many people are happy with the way they spend their money. I will be spending my money on the new Cayman cards, which will probably be around £300, and I will feel not just a sense of happiness knowing my card can play most games really well, I'll also feel slightly ripped off, but again, nobody is forcing me to part with the cash. "If you don't like it, move to consoles."
Really cant wait to see what the HD6970 and HD6990 will perform like. We should see these before Xmas hopefully using 28nm die.
a lot of it is shenanigains.. like the game makers work with the gpu makers to make 'max' work without effort for a certain config.. physx is the biggest offender when it comes to this.. you have to be a rigger and find ways around the shens.. the cards since the 200 series are fast enough to play all of these games and still look damn good I played stalker cop in dx11 just to see what I missed on the 260.. if a little shine on the bodies, I couldn't remember anything being any different.. I actually made some video with fraps back then on the 260 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPqgWkzlYng&fmt=22 this latest fallout game.. you use an older dx9 dll and the game runs balls out max with the same eye candy.. it's all shens man- they need to sell new cards.. funny cause these console ports aren't pushing anything, but the pc somehow needs to keep up with ancient tech
