My first edition to photo of the day. From some street shooting around Melbourne yesterday, can't decide between the two of them (I think the Waffle Stand).

hehe, the dude in the second shot looks constipated xD The tilting your camera thing is good in some cases, but be careful not to get too carried away with it.

 

Yeah, most of the set is tilted mainly because I was shooting from the hip to get the candids and remain in the background (like a lot of street photography is). Just trying a new style - I'll still typically be shooting straight.

 

I think there is a misconception that street photography has to be shot incognito, camera hidden at the hip, with tilted views. I'm not sure where or when that notion was born, but the best street photography I've seen stays closer to a basic documentary style. Don't just tilt the camera and take a photo of a place. Level the camera and let me explore the little details that make the place more than just a location.

Considering the two photos you posted, I'm thinking about a question that Pookeyhead has asked in a number of recent threads: Why black and white? Especially in the waffle stand photo, I'm curious as to what all that graffiti and signage looks like in color. Sometimes black and white is effective to elicit a specific response to a place. In this case, I think color would add an additional element to the place's identity.

Another half-day off work. Thought I recognised this spot, the first one's from today, the second was taken last February.


Anyways, street photography. Don't people react when you start pointing glass in their direction, either moving out of shot, tensing up, posing etc?

The black and white was deliberate with the waffle stand. There were way too many distracting colours in this case. The man standing against the wall could have gone either way. The wall behind him was bright red (I probably would have had to tone that one down a little).

Love the first one - I think blown highlights can be a really effective technique, and it really works here, makes the pic feel harsh and cold.

Nice street photog It was awesome to see degraves street on bit-tech! (I go to school not far from the city, and hence spend a lot of time there, particularly degraves/flinders)
