The Internet as much as we rage... is pushed around by money, investment, investment, investment... thats how it has always worked. However I don't think the internet could be censored on a truly global scale. Look how fast infomation travels... a picture of the 5990 covered the globe in under 25 minutes, you'd have to knock out the entire net all at once to put anything in place censorship wise.

It is how it has always worked, but that doesn't mean it couldn't work any other way. Of course the internet will never be free. The costs of maintaining and improving infrastructure will have to be covered, but I suspect most of the current "investment" goes into paying shareholder dividends and the bosses' salaries. I guarantee that a non-commercial entity would be able to offer the same degree of infrastructure improvements for much lower costs. I agree that censoring any one given material on a global scale would be very difficult, however censorship is fast becoming global as various governments and commercial entities gain a hold over it - they just censor different things in different countries.

Thehippoz is not the most sophisticated of writers (and arguably, thinkers) so his statements often come across as crass. But this also means that on occasion he has a way of cutting right through all the crap and getting right to the crux of an issue. I've certainly learned to read his posts twice and think about them before I reply. His only flaw is that he does not consider other viewpoints much. That does not mean he has to agree with them, but just because they seem circumlocuitous does not make them miss the point altogether. If he can get this balance right he'll make a fearsome debater.

73% of web servers run Apache which is open source. A main principle and practice of open source software development is peer production by bartering and collaboration, with the end-product, source-material, "blueprints" and documentation available at no cost to the public. Sounds like volunteer work to me.
Web servers sure, but what runs on top of them aren't usually open source. Heck, even the most popular server control panel - cPanel - is closed source/proprietary And then that as an aside, the actual software powering the websites: be it a bespoke solution (ala 99.9% of massive websites), vBulletin, IPB (popular forum softwares) etc aren't open source. Even SMF (the fairly popular free forum software) isn't open source - despite being 100% volunteer driven - since its license prevents it from being distributed. So yeah, I know what you are saying but much of the web is closed source IMO (even if the open source parts of the web and software are fairly big and growing daily, granted). *Shrugs* I guess it depends on the definition of open source (of which there really isn't one, hence why many consider SMF - which is free and volunteer driven - not to be open source). I see it as something whose license allows it to be modified and distributed as the recipient would like. And much of the software online doesn't operate via such licenses.

I don't think you make an ass of yourself, and I also think you have the gift of being able to put your point across without trying to gild the lilly. I trust people who talk straight much more than those who clearly like the sound of their own voices (or flow of their text) too much!
