It's worrying how there are people that REALLY thing the 'net should be more like TV. Get some filtered channels of brainless crap, because there's someone else deciding that's what you want and deserve to see. Total BS.

    Great firewall of China ahoy!
I think the song goes: "I predict a riot, I predict a riot..."

The better solutions would be to educate the idiot parents that would advocate this kind of move, into the ways of local parental controls.

    Totally.

That's because voting makes no difference and the system doesn't allow an alternative.

This started in the 90s with AOL and Compuserve using keywords and portals to homogenise content. Then the internet got good in the late 90s, early 00s. But with the advent of Web 2.0 and now mobile apps, less and less people actually use the "internet" and just stick to the same streams of information.

So whilst this a very bad move, it would probably be easy to get away with, because people already don't like typing web addresses or actually looking for information. They just want things to arrive in their hands. Lazy ****s.

I was slightly concerned until I read

Seeing as how they continually refuse to block illegal forms of filesharing on a cost basis, there's no way they'll block internet pornography as it's so much more widespread (by orders of magnitude)

It does annoy me as the Government seems to continually set itself up as our nannies - surely the more cost effective solution is to educate parents in internet safety?
Ministers cry about children being exposed to porn, violent and addictive video games, drugs, alchol, sex - but somehow it's no longer seen to be the parents' role to help their children understand the issues.

@OP it's alway good to quote your source - especially when it comes to something as (potentially) important as this. I believe it broke first here although it also got taken up by such worthy publications as the Daily Mail

At the end of the day, they're still planning how to do it, it's going to be some time before they figure that out and put it forward to vote. By that time, hopefully all the old fogeys who don't understand how the Internet works will have died off and the computer literates can go back to surfing for smut, unmolested by Big Brother.

Edit: They failed to shut down ThePirateBay and now they are trying to eliminate porn? Talking about suicide missions...

Does this mean in the future if you want to watch porn you will initially have to ask your ISP for permission? How embarrassing. Seems like a good way to track peoples habits as well. And governments love spying on our habits.

Also, if this goes ahead it makes me wonder where it will stop. What will be next on the 'block list'? After all, if we are considered too stupid to censor what our children see on our own computers, what else will we be deemed too stupid to do?

    what the ****...
Yeah I can really see people ringing up their ISP (on a premium rate line no doubt) saying "yes please unblock porn for me"
However thinking about it surely then though they will have to provide some sort of ID to prove you are old enough, or it just renders the whole thing pointless.

Add to that the problem of the filter sorting out stuff like sexual health and advice from porn, just seems like it is going to cause more issues than it is worth.

But most importantly it should be down to the parents. Advice and guidance on blocking out inappropriate content I am all for (actually I think it would be money well spent).

I can't see this ever happening, but the concept that its been floated as an idea is appalling. First internet porn gets blocked, then torrent sites that have porn on them get blocked, then rapidshare, megaupload, etc etc...

On the technical side of things, this is practically impossible. This is similar to the filter they were proposing here in Australia, and Stephen Conroy (Minister for screwing up the internet) ignored all of the expert opinion of the technical and moral sides of it and tried to push ahead. The whole thing is practically buried now (due to a swing in government seats) although he still pops his head up now and again about it.

Thing is, Conroy's filter had a much smaller block list, and that still wasn't technically feasible. I can't see this working effectively at all.

it could work the other way around.. block if requested- that would help people who want the net for school and basic google type stuff.. stop the little porn monster in the house from seeing too much

block by default isn't the way to go.. it's a paid service- I could see if it was free

Didn't the porn industry try to have all porn address end in .xxx so that all porn could be easily blocked and filtered years ago? Can't remember why they didn't.

I’d wait for a more reliable source to appear before taking it as gospel.

Having said that, filters are useless against human nature. If people want to get to something and find there's a system stopping them, they will navigate a way round it.

In any case, blocking all porn on the Internet would be far more difficult than simply adding 4chan to the list. It'd require clear a clear definition on what material is classed as pornography. Would art fall under the filter, fictional text, wallpapers featuring scantily clad ladies? That's take care of Deviantart, Wordpress and our own 'post your desktop' thread.

But for it to really be effective, they'd have to have tighter control over other media outlets such as magazines (read the front page of Sugar when you’re next in a newsagent) and television. That is unless having Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera all over our TV screens at all hours wearing nothing more than electrical tape is truly considered wholesome.

Actually, those skincare commercials with the naked peoples should go. Also adverts for yoghurt what makes you poo, only because they annoy me. Seriously, the little yellow balls in your stomach can't find your bum if you don't eat sciency sounding cow squeezings?

    Uh, yeah.
