so with that said, whats the general consensus on this one... is it better to run 8gb (2gb x 4) or 8gb (4gb x 2)???
Yeah, got a 4GB set of GeIL Value Plus PC12800 ram from overclockers for a mere £33.98 two days ago, today its £44!
2x4GB - allows you to keep your overclock - or even clock to same levels if you haven't overclocked yet!
always buy largest stick you can afford. easier upgrade and better overclock due to less strain on memory controller. can't wait for my 16GB
If you have the spare cash it is deff worth picking up some back-up/upgrade DDR3 RAM at the moment if the prices are going to rocket. Some fantastic deals going around on the net. I was just wondering to myself the other day if the current prices were here to stay. Why should the price of memory fluctuate so wildly all the time? I know it is all about the strength of the pound and probably supply and demand but I can't think of any other component that has such a roller-coaster pricing policy!
Following this post, I too will be buying some memory asap for my new system that I will be building in 1-2 months. However I need 20 post for free delivery from Scan. For your information, 1.5V is the standard voltage for any DDR3 according to JEDEC. Every 1.65V RAM is required to work with 1.5V too, usually with the standard timings (1333 CL9).
So what's Corsair's latest and best? Vengeance? Dominator? I'm getting lost in these different types. Or are they named differently for different purposes? Edit: I'm tempted to buy some Corsair Vengeance RAM, but I know it won't fit under my NH-D14 cooler. Might be time to invest in a H70 too... Hmmm.
That's what I am looking at now. the problem with the Vengance and Dominators is the height of the RAM heatsinks. For normal height RAM, Scan have the CMX8GX3M2A1600C9 2 x 4GB kit listed @ £82.94 but they are not in stock. They also have the voltage wrong, according to Corsair, that kit is 1.5v (http://www.corsair.com/cmx8gx3m2a1600c9.html). Lot's of typos on Scan's website at the moment...
It's one of those things where I want to try and take advantage of the low prices now before they rise, but I don't know if I'll need 8 or even 12GB soon(ish) At the moment I'm running an OCZ Obsidian 6GB set and it's working fine. ARGH!

According to Corsair, they run at 1600MHz 9-9-9-24 1.65v. as far as i can tell, Dominator is their best series, Vengeance is just a marketing gimmick, XMS3 is their standard set. i went for XMS3 because it will be easier to sell than Vengeance, no gimmick heatsinks.
Yeah, unless you're water cooling (or have a very high clearance cpu cooler) you have to go for stuff like Corsair XMS3, or GeIL Value Plus or Performance Plus - I don't think that most coolers can even accommodate G.Skill under them now
