I played it for a week then threw it back ont he shelf. back to IV now. And the MP on Civ V? What a joke. Buggy laggy piece of piss to be honest.
I've never played the multiplayer on any Civ if I'm honest. But there again I'm anti-social unless it's RTS/FPS Civ5 is fantastic to be fair, I really do enjoy it.

I half liked/hated the way it was more arcade gaming than previous civs. Probably a lot more easier for newbs to play and deffo set up so it can be easily converted to consoles. IMHO the best feature was one unit per square, seemed to make my vs. AI games more tactical
When Civ IV came out, I didn't like it much to start with because I was used to Civ III and the add-on packs they'd brought out subsequently. Civ III seemed more of a completed game than Civ IV. Then they brought a couple of add-on packs - Beyond the Sword and Warlords - and I liked it much better. Better even than Civ III Complete. Now that Civ V has appeared on the scene, I'm still playing Civ IV - Beyond the Sword. Hopefully Firaxis will bring out add-on packs that develop Civ V into a better game.
I enjoyed Civ 5 but I must admit to feeling that a lot of the strategy was watered down....except on the battlefield. The hexagonal map and no stacking meant having to give a lot of thought to unit placement. Sadly, though, even that part felt like they could have easily expanded the strategic options massively by changing the unit abilities around a bit. After all, it seems a bit odd that the first archers could fire just as far as most other artillery and further than modern rifles. I haven't tried Civ 4 since it first came out and it is now long gone from my shelf. Still, if I see it cheap on steam again I might give it another try.
An interesting review covering the changes made by the latest patch. Makes me even happier that I boycotted Civ 5 (due to mandatory Steam). It does seem a pity though that the most innovations were in Activision's Call to Power series (public works, unit stack limits, multi-unit combat, future technologies) and the mods built on them, notably the Ages of Man (the files for it, sadly, seem to have vanished). Much of the focus in Firaxis' recent releases (Civ IV and V) seems to have been on the graphics and the gameplay seems to have suffered as a result.
I guess I agree, there is much room for 'expansion' when it comes to the Civ series and perhaps the next installment (Lets be fair these games will never die) will build heavily on this feedback to Firaxis? - More techs - More politics - Unit Stack Limits They seem to be the main point, gone are the days of Civ3 when I could get 50 Modern Armour in a stack and kill EVERYTHING.
I think I enjoyed the old civ games more (civ 2 I think??) where games seemed to last longer and were a lot bigger than they are now. I remember having to send several boat loads of units across to another continent in so to make a dent. Maybe I just wasn't doing it right then.
Nah you still have to send boat loads now chap. Also try changing the game playtime to epic or marathon if you want longer games.
its good - graphics card upgrade seems to have sped it up! but I NEED NEW UNITS + BETTER PICTURES OF MY CITY, alpha centuri V would fix it
I love sending five or six transports full of marines plus one of artillery, with an escort of battleships & destroyers against cities. Line up one or two of those groups against a couple of cities - let your enemy know you're serious about starting a war.
I played Call to Power WAY more then any other variation/generation of Civilization. I have no doubt I could fire that up right now and be lost for 10 hours easily... The only issue with Call to Power was the difficulty scaling. Easy, Easy, Easy, DEATH! Meh, still an incredibly fun game. Underwater cities! And space cities! Calling down stealth jets from outerspace to bombard enemy cities was so awesome. EDIT: I will add that I still think Civ V is a great game.

I enjoyed it but that soon turned to frustration when I started playing the biggest map possible. Every time I got to turn 700 and odd it would crash. I checked the support, saw lots of complaints on the same subject then shelved it. I'm presuming theres a patch by now that rectifies the bug but i've lost interest in my world domination plans for now ha ha.

I love Civ5, and think it is the best one yet, but only after my set of mods are applied. There are some massive balance flaws otherwise.
