One of my sister from a week or two ago, awful lighting and wonky white balance but I like it...

Bit of an impromptu picture of my dog, the background is too fussy and couldnt decide whether I preffered this one or a black and white version

Last year I added some inexpensive extension tubes to my gear, and now I'm learning to use them. Trying for max depth of field for most of these, I used a flash, hand-held away from the camera. Some of the flower pictures would look better with less depth of field...

An impromptu photo trip down to the docks sort of failed - the fog started rolling in when we got there, and the moon was too high. Still got a few decent shots though.

They're not too bad, there's a lot of noise in the photo though.

That's incredible! Any chance I could nab the original size? Would be an epic wallpaper!

    Here you go :)

I'm thinking I might have applied a bit too much noise reduction... Certainly the best shot I got though.

Ta, really going to have to work out how I can get shots like this. I've been trying for ages, although in fairness no where like yours...

I should probably go to the docks at some point!

Good tripod, shoot in raw, a lot of patience, and unfortunately, a copy of lightroom. The original photo wasn't very special - it was the crop and colour adjustments that made it.
I just sat there trying different exposures and apatures in full manual until I found the best combination. It wasn't exactly skill :p

If you look at the rest of my flickr, there's nothing particularly striking. One offs happen :D

Haha, it's more the patience I lack, if I know the subject will be there for a while, then I'll probably get a decent shot, but if I feel I'm pushed for time, I doubt I'd even try. Still really working my way round my camera, only just really ventured into the 'Manual' mode of it, and having issues there. May be time to switch to raw as well.

Same. I tend to stick to apature priority and jpg. The camera normally does a much better job of converting it from raw than me. I find raw is good for dark shots - gives you a bit more flexibility in light room. But even here I used raw+jpg.

Yeah, I think I'll have a bit more of a play in the Aperture and Shutter modes, learn about them a bit more.

As for Lightroom? That's not happening anytime soon though :(

I definitely wouldn't call it a failure, that's a really nice shot dude. BTW, where was it taken from? I can't say I recognise it with all the fog.

As for Lightroom, it may be expensive (though not so much if you're a student and can get discount) but it's an invaluable piece of software and better than anything else out there IMO. At least give the free trial a go and see if you like it, I'd be surprised if you didn't.

It was taken looking across the river from mayflower park - right next to that big grand thai resrtaunt (called kutis royal iirc). I was getting jumpy every time a car came into the carpark... not really the area you want to be hanging out in with a nice camera after dark.

It wasn't a failure, but I only got 1 nice shot out of a few hours sitting in the cold. Guess I'm not used to photograpy yet :p When we left the house it was a crystal clear night with a low moon, so it didn't live up to expectations.

The other two shots that came out of it were nice, but nothing special.

And yeh, lightroom makes a HUGE difference. The originally of that photo looked more like this, just a bit brighter and sharper. (Edit: actually, I'm quite liking the warmth of that one... The more I look at it, the less I think I did it any favours in lightroom.)

mars-bar-man said my (mostly) flower close-ups weren't bad, but were noisy.

"Uh, oh," I said, "Did I forget to change the iso to 100 after setting it at 1600 to get the picture of the wasp?"

Well, yes and no. I forgot to change back, but I'd gone only to iso 800. Still, I hadn't intended to continue shooting at that iso, and one expects some noise at that sensitivity.

But when I looked closely at the photos, I wasn't sure I saw any noise. Surely there is some, but most of what I saw that looked like noise was at the edges of leaves and stems. I think these plants have fuzzy edges. I looked closely for random specks in the broad surfaces of the leaves, but I didn't see any. Again, I'm not saying there isn't any noise.

Anyway, this morning I was able to shoot a dandelion seed "puff."
