Can you run two screens with a H67 motherboard?! I haven't actually checked them out too much...

For PSU, this might be a tad overkill at 500W when a 430W will run that machine but will give you more headroom for future upgrades.

Any suggestions for alternate cases? I get the impression that the One Hundred is a case for "higher airflow" stuff, and since this won't be over-clocked, that isn't needed. Any other good cases in the price range?

I'm not worried about overkill - the main thing I keep coming back to is the limited number of sata connectors on these PSU - most of them only have 4 which would mean that they cannot be upgraded.

Yeah, I looked that up actually after I had commented. Impressive. Not really looked into the H67 boards - that is quite a nice feature and I wasn't excpecting it would actually be included.

I would still suggest looking at the Fractal R3. It looks very sleek and understated (your father may appreciate this latter point), is pretty nice to work with and is very quiet. I think it comes on to Scan's today only page at around £77.

Do you know which software suites he uses? Might help to determine if you need a gpu or not (if they have hardware acceleration such as Cudo, etc.)

Didn't know you could get molex to sata connectors.
There will be a DVD drive, an Blu ray drive, two HDD, which (if I have counted correctly) is 4. If my dad ever wants to add HDDs or even an SSD then 4 connectors wouldn't be enough.

Why cant he use the Blueray/DVD combo drive? does he definitely need them separate? Also, he can get a single 2TB Samsung hdd drive. Anyway, this psu isnt that much more but has 6 SATA connectors: Coolermaster GX550 Power Supply 550W

He doesn't need to have them separate, but over time drives tend to wear out / stop working, and with the high cost of blue ray writers and the very low cost of a separate dvd drive it seems like the logical thing to do.

The only reason i mentioned the 5670 is that I didn't think the integrated GFX would come well with Areo running on two screens + playing multiple HD streams of video.

I dnt know exactly how much 2 screens would affect it, but I run aero on max settings and have multiple HD vids running from youtube, corel vid studio open, loads of tabs open on chrome etc, and it completely takes it - doesnt hardly even affect the cpu.

Well, annoyingly (and selflessly) my dad has now decided to delay the new pc till after my exams (so probably around two months). But thanks for the help anyway... And does anyone know when Bulldozer comes out?

Time to start reviving the thread. :) Exams nearly over.

Considering the lack of change there has been recently (come on AMD) I imagine the spec would be much the same.

My dad thought it would be worth looking at premade (is that even a word) pc, but things are not going well:
1st you get the likes of dell, which costs way more then it should (£150 for 8gb RAM:sigh:).
2nd you get the likes of Acer that are cheap but only seem to sell out of date stuff.
3rd you get the likes of Yoyotech and Scan who seem to think everyone wants a high airflow case, overclocking and a graphics card that costs more than my computer. And have comfusing websites with stupidly named computers. Like fusion beachhead.

And all of these cost more then they should considering that they get stuff more cheaply then I would.

Anyhow, rant over - Any good ones I should look at?

the best places to get pre-builts are

    scan
    cyberpower systems
    pc specialist

dont even touch branded ones like dell acer, HP etc etc they are cheap generic crap and skimp on parts where possible.

BUTTTTTTT i really really recommend you build yourself as its cheaper, more fulfilling and is full of Cheesecake
