Yes but the people who like 16:9 are for the wrong reason. They don't go and say "I need more width on my desktop for my programs".. they say "I don't want black lines when I watch movies." But most (by far) movies have black lines in any case... few of them are filmed in 16:9. In fact, some movies on Blu-ray are cropped to 16:9... it's the 4:6 full screen story all over again.

Until software will use left and right to put menu bars and ribbon bars... we need height.

Goodbytes, you are preaching to the converted here. But there are plenty of people who do like 16:9 (albeit for the wrong reasons). Some just prefer the ratio. It doesn't make them bad. It just makes them wrong:nono:

    :D

I don't mind what you pick... if you are happy, then good.
The problem is removing 16:10 on the higher end monitors... The Dell U series was a perfect balance.
You have U2711 and the U2311H to choose from for 16:9
And for the 16:10 crowed, you have the U3011, and the U2410

Now, everything is 16:9. Not even keeping 1 model for 16:10 crowed.
And this affects all manufactures. I won't be surprised if it is LG that stop making 16:10 screens.. so Dell MUST follow, which mean HP as well, and other.

This sums it up pretty well.
16:9 apologists can harp on all they want about how they prefer 16:9 so the rest of us should suck it up or buy bigger monitors, but the fact of the matter is that this is a blatant reduction in the amount of choice available to the consumer.
Consumers already pay a nasty price premium for 16:10 monitors, but if this trend continues we won't be able to get them at all. There's no way that's a good thing.
16:9 and 16:10 are essentially separate markets - It's not going to magically make 16:9 monitors cheaper to eliminate 16:10.

Yup, I'd at least like the choice of a 16:10 monitor instead of being forced to buy a 16:9 monitor that I don't want.

Will this affect the U27 series as well? Meaning the lower color gamut and the LED backlight? The U2711 is 16:9 anyway, but considering the resolution and price that's fine, especially since the aspect ratio is better for games...

I would never pay so much for a 24" monitor as the DELLs, but I have to agree than 16:10 Cheesecake
Sad to see it go even more.

I agree. They are going for the lowest common denominator. People hear 1080 and think it is the be all and end all of quality. Looks like I had better get my finger out and get a new monitor while I stilll can. Problem is my budget isn't up to a U2410 at the moment. Any good 16:10 monitors for under £350?

Yes. So crappy LED backlight. No, 16:9 isn't better for games. All games supports 16:9, 16:10 and 4:6 PERFECTLY. This is easy to do with no strech.

Well that's the price for a descent monitor.

I don't think the U2410 will disappear from 1 day from another... You should have both for an extra month... or you can see if you call if they have any left. But even if they are out, other online retailers should still have it for a few more weeks, possible a month. Then again... I never monitor this. I am just assuming.

Looks like I had better look for an alternative then. I am shaking my fist at Dell as I type this (I am typing one handed). Grrrrrr:wallbash:

Maths, nature and thousands of years of human culture say: 16:10 (ish). Dell says no.

You're right of course. However the field of view might be broader if the game is coded properly. Some games even only use 16:9 nowadays.

Anyway, this isn't the right place to argue about that, esp. since the difference between 16:9 and 16:10 isn't exactly huge when it comes to gaming. Reason I am asking is because the U3011 costs almost twice as much as the U2711 while not offering much (to me) than a few more pixels. The U2711 would be a great upgrade to my current 16:10 panel, greatly increasing screen estate and image quality while still being affordable. 1440px height really should be enough for any software, 16:9 or not - or so I hope. So - Thank you for your answer. :)

    HP still do a 24in S-IPS 1920x1200 monitor - the ZR24W. It's down to about £280+VAT now.

I've had mine a year, and it's absolutely wonderful. Dead even, no dead pixels etc etc. I'd certainly recommend it to anyone looking for a screen.

Do you use it for FPS games? Any ghosting, blur etc?

And the wide gamut LP2475W, great monitors for gaming. They were the first affordable IPS panels

What about people who use it with an Xbox and PS3, do you not get a black bar if you play mw2 on a 16:10 screen?

    buy 23 for 16.9
    buy 24 for 16.10

not hard is it? it's about choice, offering 1 inch difference of size but at exact same resolution is pretty pointless IMO.

So what if you do? The black bars shown when displaying 16:9 content on a 16:10 screen just represent the pixels that otherwise wouldn't be there if the screen were 16:10. Think of them as part of the bezel if it matters that much, or use the monitor's scaler to stretch the image to 16:10.

A 16:9 monitor can display only 16:9 at the correct horizontal width.
A 16:10 monitor can display 16:9 or 16:10, both at the correct horizontal width; and is therefore a more versatile option from the consumer's perspective when buying a monitor for their computer, regardless of what other inputs they might supply it with.
It adds vertical pixelspace and you lose nothing with 16:10.

Exactly, I've never understood the issue with black bars, that bar just represents the extra monitor you have for other applications. Personally though I'd never stretch the picture, I tried it once with my ps3 and wasn't impressed
