Samsung GX20 + Tamron 70-300. If it's any consolation I'd just literally removed my brand new Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 lens. I'll be having some interesting chats with the home insurers in the near future!
That's the sad part. I used my neck strap the whole day but got the camera back out the bag on the way home to snap a cheeky squirrel. That's when it happened.
Pllus a tiny piece of silicon is going to to do very little dropping onto solid concrete. I had a bad enough scare the other day when I was shooting outside put my 70-200 facing down on the end of the hood like always do changed lenses and it fell over, definitely was a brick in my pants lol luckily just a paint chip.
I guess that's where part of your money goes when you buy pro glass. Those things are built like a tank
You could also use a sound blimp, which probably would protect your camera if dropped. It will also make you blend in the crowd better since it dampens the shutter sound...and it looks cool as a cucumber Seriously though, bad luck with the camera, hopefully you'll get a new one with your insurance.
Pretty much yeah , all the glass I've owned has been L now Its just not worth wasting money on anything less (snobish to an extent) But even if there not completly sealed they still stand a better chance against a lesser lens, seeing as my camera has been Dunked in the sea, in sand, sand blasted on many holidays in crazy windy conditions, rained on, mudded, bashed, nocked etc... This will be with me till it dies but its still going strong 60k+shutter clicks so far . Good luck with the insurence people though they can be a bit of a pain when things do go wrong.
Strangely surreal experience with the insurers. I gave them the Jacobs quote for the broken camera and they honoured it outright. No looking around for best prices or anything. They paid out £814 for a Pentax K7 and £192 for a Sigma 70-300mm APO plus the refund for the quote (minus £100 excess). I'm still in shock! It was too easy. I've ordered a Pentax K5 (body only) for £875 and a Tamron 70-300mm for £120 leaving me around £75 out of pocket for the exact lens I had before but a far far far better camera in the K5. I only bought a Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 a few weeks ago and i cant wait to get it on the K5 now! Yay!
Might I suggest always changing lenses over your gear bag, kneeling over it? That way if anything slips, at least it doesn't fall that far down.
Who do you use? I keep meaning to get my gear covered but I never seem to get round to it. Your people sound pretty reliable. Pretty quick too.
