Basically Bbq.of.DooM has hijacked the article. Apparently ATi/AMD cards are better suited to the concept of bit coin mining due to OpenCL.

Right that makes some sense but it is a still a rather random comment to see in a GPU thread.

I would hasten to guess that the majority of people buying this card have never heard of Bitcoin let alone plan on doing any "mining".

Exactly, before I saw that comment I had never heard of it. I guess Google is your friend.

Sorry for the hijack but a few people asked what it was so I thought it was worth pointing out.

As for the card it seems rather excellent value. Just about beats everything in the £100-150 bracket and sits at the bottom of it. If Bulldozer arrives soon rather than September I could see myself building a system round the two.

Is it worth considering 2 of these over the current £200 single GPU cards?

Ive never really considered multi GPU setups because of potential 'issues' but £200 for 2 of these seems like a lot of power for money.

Two of these will roughly perform like a HD5970. You can use the HD5970 in various reviews to see how these would compare to say a GTX570 or HD6970.

Normally I would say Crossfire for this money is worth it however the HD58xx were known to be a little flakey when it came to CF performance / stability so it may not be the best bet.

Thanks to improved CF scaling 2 x HD6850 (which are slower in single card configs) would be a better CF option.

What's wrong with OCUK? I've never had any problems with them...

On the card: if I hadn't just Watercooled a 580, I would be on these like a rash... 3 Watercooled in tricked would be incredible! :)

Why use drivers that are almost 4 months old - when there have been many perf. optimizations in 11.4??
This could completely change the current ranking of the cards esp. 6850 vs. 5850... so a review thats outdated since the moment it was posted, sigh...

I don't mean to cause a fuss but that seems like a slightly iffy system to me. Surely that limits all cards below ultra-high-end from getting as good a score, which just doesn't seem quite right to me. The most powerful cards should not necessarily be considered a "better product" than those at the lower end.

I was thinking the same actually, the new scoring system (for GPUs at least) doesnt work. Surely they should be 'scored' in relation to the competing cards, not cards that are x5/6 more expensive!

To praise a card for punching above its price point, and destroying everything in its own price range, 81% doesnt seem to stack up tbh.

It's just like comments about folding in GPU threads. It's a cheap card which likely performs well with the Bitcoin client so there's a good chance that people will buy and use them for that purpose. Typically any card with a good price to performance ratio and reasonable power draw will be good for these types of farm systems.

Good to see my aging GTX260 55nm was a sound investment, still plays everything I throw at it :3

i got my 5850 recently for bitcoin mining because it seems the best price performance ratio.
1440 processor cores is fantastic, and draws way less power than my main PC's GTX 470(which is crap for mining)

I got mine for 110 from aria.co.uk, they seemed to have plenty in stock. I will trial the bitcoin mining for a week or 2 on 1 card and then maybe buy another, at the current price of a bitcoin, you can get the cost back of this gfx card in less than a week.

mine are xfx, never had any problems with them, i think all the 5850's run at the same base clock (725) and all can be oc to 775 easy with ccc. I paid £199 each for mine last year,so £100 is great price.
