CPU cpu upgrade 1156

Hey everyone, i'm upgrading from an overclocked i3 to a quad core for an 1156 p55 motherboard. does anyone think its worth the premium for the cheapest i7s or would i be best just going for an i5 760? ill be overclocking either way.
let me know your thoughts.

 

also there's a fair chance another 4gb of memory might get thrown in the mix... if that makes a difference lol =]

I would just get a 760.

 

Check for 750's too. Sometimes you can get these at a bargain especially if you're considering used.

Nope, both i5's. (i5-750 and i5-760)
Both are quad core chips that'll go to around the 4.0Ghz mark with a good board. No onboard gpu or hyper threading on either.

i've got a good board too, the gigabyte p55 ud2m i think. bit-tech used to suggest it in their buyers guide for their 1156 builds

 

all the i7 gives you is hyper-threading really, so unless you need another 4 cores (again, hyper-threaded) then i wouldn't bother...

 

Don't they have more L3 cache aswell and usually better OC speeds?

 

I've grown to love hyperthreading. You can get a used i7 860 for around the £100 mark, which is the same as what a 920 would go for normally.

 

hyperthreading is pretty cool, my i3 performs way above a standard dual core thanks to it. also ive found some i7s on ebay sub £120 so i think that may be where im heading =] thanks for the suggestions everyone. on another note do you think my psu is up standard for my build including an overclocked quad core, its a be quiet! 450w model.

Quite a few 860s have sold around the £100 mark on ebay - it's all about keeping an eye out for the cheap listings. There aren't many listed at the moent, but this one might go for nearer £100 since the seller is accepting offers, and the buy-it-now price of £135 is WAY too steep for this CPU. There haven't been any offers yet, so you could theoretically use that to your advantage - lay down the law, and say £100 or nothing.

PSU-wise, 450W will be fine. I upgraded from 500W but only because I had GTX470 SLI for a short time. Sold the second GPU but kept the ridiculous PSU

 

The i7 860 is a great CPU, and can OC quite well, I've managed to get mine to 4.5Ghz (wasn't happy with my voltages or temps so lowered), but I'm sat at 4Ghz all day long now. If you can get hold of one I thoroughly recommend it.

 

yeah, but i'm not going to pay a 50% premium for a little more l3 cache. and no, they don't really oc any better...

 

The i7 is more L3 AND the extra 4 cores of HT. So effectively 8 cores on the CPU. I know, I have one too.

I got mine to around 4 on my Gigabyte, but someone waved a Big Bang Fuzion under my nose for a price I couldn't resist and I bit. It should be in today. I so can't wait.

If you can get an i7 for around 100 pounds (American keyboard) then grab it, I'm pretty blasted happy with mine.

 

L3 cache makes a fair bit of difference (maybe not £50)

 

Okay, so the people who are saying they don't OC any better/aren't worth the extra, has anyone actually used one of the i7 8xx chips?
