Scratch Build – In Progress Project: Blue Horizon - "MOTY" Nominee

I've missed quite a bit of this, that top panel looks superb mate. The lighting on it is pretty much perfect.

 

If you need some more let me know and I will get you some for postage costs, that wouldnt be much i expect.

Our sheets are only about 50cm sq give or take 20cms maybe
(also have it in a nice blue too, Image as color reference only)

 

It's just looking freaking awesome mate. Not long to go before we can have a look at the whole shebang.

 

That is amazing craftsmanship. I would not have the patience to pull that off.

Yep, its all slowly coming together, here the next update:

I first filed out two strips for the end of the mesh:



I then JB welded it to the mesh:







I then masked it up for painting:



While the paint was drying I gave the backplate a quick polish:





Here's the acrylic strips painted:



I also painted the mesh but I forgot to take a pic of it

Next stage was roughing up the surface of the backplate for the JB weld:



I then put JB weld on and put some weights on top, results will be posted up tomorrow:

 

JB weld madness!! I was wondering though will these acrylic strips illuminate as good as before?

Very nice fine detail work going on here & hope you manage to solve the consistant glow bit out if it's possible but I'm not sure if it is without running less juice through it with it being a small acrylic piece, tough to do a perfect glow without any glare spots but fingers crossed you manage to do it .

Thanks Waynio, I've actually decided to embrace the glare spots I think it looks quite cool, pics are below.


I've had a bit of a set back with the top of the case, even with all my careful measurements the top and front acrylic strips don't line up luckily though I've found the solution. I've managed to pull the mesh from the acrylic using clamps on the milling machine without damaging anything, I've then trimmed the mesh down a bit and re-JB welded it the correct position:



While waiting for the JB weld to set I finished off the work on the front door panel, by filling in the gap between the casting and the alu sheet with car body filler:





I then sanded it all down and painted it:





And here's the eye candy for you all














The combo of foam and polished alu sheet allows for a slight reflection of light through at certain angles:



It will have a little more sanding done on the alu casting and the acrylic will be polished just before I fit it to the case.

 

So happy following this worklog - you've come such a long way (and still has quite a bit to go, hehe) and finally some crucial pieces are beginning to come nicely together. Mod on!

I've made part of the hinges today, there a 5mm piece of threaded alu at one end which then reduces to 3mm. A 2mm tube of non friction plastic then sits over the 3mm end of the alu, which will create a smooth feel while opening and closing the door:



All the work was done in the usual way on the lathe.

 

Looks kinda insignificant but it's a nice touch of detail to the function of the panel, good stuff .

 

this is just so sweet.

 

That foam and shiny aluminium really works well, especially with the hex mesh over it

 

i have follow this built from the start, and i did think in the start how the hell will he pull this case of :O. and now i see how,
Metall skill, dont ever give up, tons of idees and a sick eye for details.
im just on my knees bow for you!!

Keep on whit this and i hope it never ends it just keeps getting better better and better!
