Right I'll cut to the chase, I mainly play games on my P.C and my gtx 275 is looking a bit long in the tooth. The reason I want to upgrade is because the latest Alice game Alice Madness jerks every so often during the game as if it's struggling to render the game at an acceptable fps. So budget is £200 ATI or Nvidia is welcomed, I prefer Nvidia but wouldn't turn my nose up at an ATI card if someone can recommend a good one. Oh I'd also be looking for a dual fan version of a gfx card as well because in my experience it helps to keep the temperatures down much more than a single fanned card. Thank you. Rest of my rig (if it helps in recommending a card?) is i7 860 @ stock, 4GB DDR3 Ram, 1TB Samsung F3 hdd, Gigabyte P55 UD3 motherboard.
Oh and I was looking at this website http://www.hwcompare.com/8922/geforce-gtx-275-vs-geforce-gtx-560-ti/ (after considering getting a 560 Ti) and apparently their isn't much difference in performance between it and a gtx 275!
In terms of raw grunt they are probably about the same, but the 560Ti will have more features and be better optimised for modern games so it would still be an upgrade. Don't forget the extra video ram too. Am a little surprised it gets jerky though tbh, I have no problem running it in either SLI or non SLI mode with 9800GTX+'s. What res are you playing at?
I'm playing it @ 1680x1050 on a Viewsonic 22" Monitor. I was surprised it's jerky as well to be honest but it's always the same everytime I play it.
Yes I do. See screenshot from Everest Ultimate. Can't understand why it's jerking to be honest, but it's only after I've been playing the game for a bit and only at certain points in the game.
I don't know that game, but see if there are any patches for the game and update your video card drivers.
Absolute tosh. The 560ti is far far faster than the 275 (and the comparison on that link is with a 285). It'd be a good choice @ £200. The alternative from ATIs camp is the 6950 2GB which trades blows with the 560ti depending on the games you play.
I'm with parge on this one. Also why not save one more month and get a 6970 or a 570 but in saying that the 560ti is a damn good card Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
HD6950 and clock it. Voila HD6970-like performance for ~ £40-50 less. Alternatively do the same for the GTX560TI. Both are great cards although I would sway more towards the HD6950 due to the extra Vram.
If the game is jerking suddenly it might not be the card, could be a bug etc. The 275 certainly shouldnt run out of vmem for example.
One quick way to test would be to turn down the texture setting as far as possible. Assuming that the jerking still happens and the card isn't throttling due to heat (check using MSI afterburner) then it most likely the game itself. I am not familiar with that game at all but is it possible that the jerking is related to a large portion of the map loading on the fly, ala Fallout 3 / Oblivion?
Do you experience the same problems with more demanding games? I would defiantly try to see if there's a patch for the game or update graphics driver. For GFX card suggestion I would go for ATI 6950 and then flash the BIOS and unlock shaders to make performance comparable to 6970. Other wise 560ti are a good choice as well.
1. IF you must flash the 6950 (IF you get it, DO NOT flash a 6970 bios on it, make sure you flash it just to get the unlocked shaders) 2. The difference between a 6950 with a stock overclock vs an unlocked overclock is going to be no more than 2-3 FPS which isn't worth it really.
Get the MSI 560Ti HAWK. It has the new Twin Frozr 3 cooler, runs fast and quiet and cool. If you have a look at some tests it runs as fast as a 570 in a lot of things and costs almost a hundred quid less. Perfect! also +1 to what xaser said.
Your PSU might be a factor in your upgrading endeavours. Which make and model are you currently using?
