Can Asus' latest RoG board make the AM3+ platform truly desirable?

Love my crosshair v but the bios needs a bit of sorting out still. Since updating my bios the cpu tries to cook itself if I sit in the efi screen fiddling about for longer than a couple of minutes. No CPU overheats once in windows or under load. Also dont try using a wireless keyboard... Still it's a great improvement over navigating it's predecessor and it's able to reach better overclocks

Tbh I think the only score that us needed is the overall, most the time the sub numbers dont make sense.

Good product: 90%
Bad product: 50%
Easy.

Also when reviewing a game and basically call it **** all the way through and give it 50%

Read expensive. Saw price and laughed, thats cheap compared to my last 3 £250+ mobos.

 

I didn't see any mention of the intel NIC apart from that listed in the specifications? As far as I am aware, this is the only AM3+ board with an intel NIC, and one of very few AMD boards at all to have such a thing. While I realise you don't have a network testing section in your motherboard reviews, I would have thought this would have at least got a mention, if not contributed to a higher features score.

(For those of you un-aware, intel NICs are widely regarded as being the best out there by many, and if something can give you a lower ping or higher throughput on the network, this is it.)

 

Look at those framerates!! Geeeeeeeeeez this is a fast board. Forget the gooney bit-tech multimedia suite, this thing can GAME really really well.

 

i've had my CH5F for the last week - great board. No set-up problems at all - booted first time of asking.

Yes it's an expensive board for an AMD system, but damn - is it worth it especially if you do decide to pair it with a FX chip when they are finally released. Mines currently running with a 965BE at stock speeds and hasn't yet run into any games it cant run

 

I'm quite pleased with the score and the review itself. Asus, let us have the Extreme edition and crank whatever you still can up, squeezing every ounce of juice from the oldie K10 and highlighting the Bulldozer.

The price being expensive is subjective since you can't have a ROG top of the line Intel mobo for that price. I understand the expensive part but is acceptable. I'm only sad that it always the red and black theme, I would prefer some black and blue or something like a white mobo and orange parts (or whatever colour), I mean, a white mobo kicks ass everyday

 

so okay Im wanting to get a buldozer 8 core when it comes out in Sept... but is there any value in waiting to see what boards come out at that time? or would it be safe enough to start getting say this board and ram in preparation for that CPU to sorta spread out the expense?

 

from what i've read on another site earlier on - the 8 core are likely to be around $300 or so (current exchange rate that works out to roughly £190) - but knowing rip off britain - over £200!!!

On that basis, it makes sense to spread the cost out - that's one of the reasons i got the board now and not when the new FX chips come out

@treker_ed - agreed, makes sense to spread the cost of the upgrade, and the great thing about a really good AM3+ board is that it can work now with an existing chip and memory, and when A8's are released, and then fall in price (3-6 months) then the upgrade will make sense...

I don't really care if it "beats" an Intel chip, just as long as the new chips are much faster than the ones they replace...
