I am looking for a laptop that is around the £500 Mark (£550 the absolute limit)

I have seen a lenovo z570 on pc world for £479 with an 2nd gen i5 and 4th of ram.
On saveonlaptops.co.uk there are multiple options for it. Would it be worth dropping the CPU to an i3 and get a gt520m. Or get the i5 and gt520m (will it make much difference).

The main uses will be web browsing, films and some light gaming when away from my pc. Likely games are civilisation 5 and age of mythology.

Depite the relatively light use I would always plump for the i5 2xxx over the i3 2xxx in the mobile series, if only to get the turbo feature.

Thanks to the relatively low stock frequencies on the SB mobile series the turbo feature really comes into its own.

Have a look on www.dmxdimension.com to see if there might be a XPS15 or Inspirion 15R which might suit your requirements. They link you to the best offers available direct from dell and tell you the latest coupon codes to get further money off.

I should have said that i'm not keen on dell laptops, and they are still a bit expensive @ £600 for dell equivalent to the lenovo i5 no dedicated GPU.

    Intel Core i5 2410M 2.30GHz
    Windows 7 Home Premium
    15.6" High Definition (1366x768) WLED
    4096MB
    500GB
    1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 525M

The XPS15 looks to be around the £600 mark for the same spec.

Yeh but the dell keyboards feel horrible and aren't known for their build quality. Someone I know has an xps 17 and i don't really like the keyboard and it has lots if flex in it. The good thing is that they come with a 7200rpm hdd as standard.

kinda on the same subject, but a lower price (so sorry for the hijack)

i have been looking for a new laptops to replace my very aged tosh L20

    http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Dell_Inspiron_15R_1085130.html

this is my current favourite to replace it with.

all its gonna be doing is web browsing, some iplayer (and varients), playing some WOW, and some trackmania.

the nice GPU has drawn me towards it, but does anyone have any comments on the inspiron, or a better alternative for the same kind of money

    thanks

    I just bought a Dell 15" 5110 from ebay - brand new, for £370 - delivered.

Its awesome, and probably as powerful and snappy as my desktop.

I needed it for going back to Africa, netbooks just don't cut it for me, and I want my gaming fix when up on Kilimanjaro!!

    Core i3-2310M 2.1Ghz
    Intel HD3000 Sandy bridge Graphics
NVIDIA GT525M 1GB (with Nvidia Optimus)
    HDMI 4.0 with 3d Support
    Intel Wireless Display
    4GB (1 soDIMM - 1 slot free) 1333 DDR3
    500GB 7200rpm drive (surprisingly fast)
All wireless N, bluetooth 3.0, USB 3.0 eSATA etc etc

Now OK, it isn't the prettiest or most well built or lightest laptop you can buy, but for £400, where else will you get a full on gaming machine - with 5+ hours battery life for general tasks (10-15% screen brightness - wireless on, power saving max) and over 120minutes gaming on 50% brightness???

Lenovo IdeaPads are quite nice too, but a little more expensive, but I can confirm that the i3-2310 is more than enough for modern games, the bottle neck will still be the GPU, even with 96 stream processors at 600Mhz (same number as a 9600GT desktop card if i'm not mistaken).

Keyboard has some flex, and there are issues with the wireless card (google "Intel 1030N issues") but once you realise that it doesn't support TKIP properly and use AES instead, those issues do go away.

I got this, and then bought a refurb HP 2510p with an extended battery for when I'm travelling, the inspiron will be in my house up on the mountain, ready for me to frag away when the power cuts hit in, and continue web surfing and poker playing long into the night on my 2510p when the main one runs out of juice.

    Inspiron 15R N5110 w/Nvidia GT525M + i3-2310M

    I can also confirm:

    F1 2010 runs on HIGH, native res 1366x768 @ 40-50fps
    Race07 runs MAXED OUT with 8xQ AA @ 75-90fps
    Left4Dead over 120fps
    Modern Warfare 2 @ 45fps on High

    What more do you need???

Check the specs (always contact seller for detailed info) and make sure you get the GT525M as well as the onboard intel graphics (does cool power saving switching with no lag or errors).

Look out for others in the range, you can get an i7 Quad on this machine, but seems like overkill given the maximum GPU is a 525M and it will only eat up more power.. each to their own i guess and how much you wanna spend.

Mine was £370 buy it now (look at completed listings in last week) but it looks like there is one for £279.99 with the same spec. I paid the extra to ensure it still had full MFR warranty etc, as I'm taking it with me to Africa in October for a year and a half.

    Happy bidding!!! ;)
